The first week of October brings the familiar buzz of the Uusikaupunki Autumn Market, filling the Market Square and Alinenkatu street on Friday and Saturday. The weekend also features the Toivon siiville event, marking the culmination of Uusikaupunki Parish’s Year of Hope. The programme includes talks, activities and music, with performances by Jussi Rainio, Anna Eriksson and others. On Sunday, it’s time for a trip back to the 1980s as Rauman Soittokunta and its soloists bring the decade’s biggest hits to Cruselli.

There are also plenty of ways to get active and unwind, and the winter swimming season at Metsälehto Sauna starts again on Sunday. The week also offers films, exhibitions and much more – pick your favourites and enjoy the turn of September and October!

Uusikaupunki Autumn Market

The Uusikaupunki Autumn Market has a long history, dating back to the 18th century. In the old days, the market began at six in the morning, when “market peace” was declared by drumming from a window of the Town Hall, followed by the reading of the town magistrate’s market proclamation.

These days, the market doesn’t start quite so early! This Friday, the stalls will fill the Market Square and Alinenkatu street from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm.

Come and enjoy the flavours of the autumn harvest, delicious treats, high-quality handicrafts and an authentic market atmosphere.

Toivon siiville

Uusikaupunki Parish’s Year of Hope culminates in the Toivon siiville event at Wintteri on Friday and Saturday, 2–3 October. The varied weekend programme offers music and activities for all ages – adults, young people and children.

On Friday at 6 pm, Maksetut Viulut and Jussi Rainio will perform at the evening event in the main hall. After his performance, Jussi Rainio will be interviewed by vicar Juhana Markkula. Guest speakers include Matti Hernesaho and Heli-Päivikki Lauren. At the same time, the youth event at Jättiläisen portaat will feature artist Amos and speaker Hannu Välimäki.

Saturday’s programme begins at 3 pm with activities for the whole family. A children’s concert in the main hall will celebrate 3-year-olds in particular, but everyone is welcome. The programme features Siina & Taikaradio together with the parish’s early childhood education team.

At 5 pm, the evening event in the main hall will feature performances by Eve & Ossi and Anna Eriksson, with Teija Leino and Matti Hernesaho also taking part. At the same time, there will be a separate programme for children and school-age participants at Jättiläisen portaat and in the budo hall, led by Katariina Nyman. Children over the age of three may also take part without their parents.

The evening concludes with a youth event starting at 8 pm, featuring Amos and Park 7.

Rauman Soittokunta: 1980s Concert Sun 4 October at 3 pm

Take a trip back in time to the golden sounds of the 1980s! Rauman Soittokunta brings an energetic and nostalgic selection of 80s favourites to Crusell Hall, packed with familiar hits and plenty of emotion.

The concert features Heta Halonen, winner of Finland’s Tango Queen title, and musical theatre professional Lauri Ketonen as soloists. The orchestra is conducted by Anne Lehtomäki-Koskinen. The concert lasts approximately two hours, including an interval.

Lecture: Finland’s Defence and Lessons from the War in Ukraine Mon 28 September at 6 pm, Wintteri, lower secondary school, classroom 1, Viikaistenkatu 3.
The lecture explores how Finland would respond to a potential military threat together with its partners and what lessons can be learned from the war in Ukraine from the perspective of Finland’s defence. The lecturer is retired General Staff Lieutenant Colonel Joni Lindeman, Executive Director of the Southwest Finland Reservist Districts. Register for the lecture on the Vakka-opisto website. Vilttejä ja vaatteita – Lecture at Wintteri Tue 29 September at 6 pm, Rauha Hall, Viikaistenkatu 3. Textile manufacturing was an important industry in Uusikaupunki in the 20th century, producing woollen blankets, shawls, fabrics, clothing and socks. The lecture explores local companies, products and workers as well as the history of the textile industry in Uusikaupunki. The lecture is based on an exhibition at the Wahlberg Museum House and is organised in cooperation with the Uusikaupunki Museum and Vakka-opisto. Admission is free, but advance registration on the Vakka-opisto website is recommended. Lecture is in Finnish.
Baby Rhymes at the Main Library Wed 30 September from 9.30 to 10 am. Enjoy traditional and newer nursery rhymes and familiar children’s songs together with your baby. The session is led by librarian Tuula Amberla and is intended for babies aged 0–18 months. Main Library, Alinenkatu 34.
Read-Aloud Session at Sakunkulma Wed 30 September from 2 to 3 pm, Zachariasseninkatu 1. Päivi Poskiparta will be reading aloud. You are also welcome to bring along your own handicraft or other activity, and there will be time to discuss thoughts inspired by the book.

Uusi kirkko

New Church, Rauhankatu 3.
Open on Thursdays from 4 pm to 6 pm. In the chancel, you will find a prayer altar and a candle stand, where you can light a candle if you wish. The Gothic-style church was completed in 1865 and designed by architect Georg Theodor von Chiewitz. Free admission.

Vilttejä ja vaatteita – Made in Uusikaupunki exhibition, Wahlberg Museum House, Ylinenkatu 11.
Uusikaupunki’s textile industry flourished particularly in the 1940s–1960s and employed a large number of women, although the first factory was established as early as 1919. The most significant company in the industry, Uudenkaupungin
villatavaratehdas (later Uuvi Oy), operated until 1987. The town was also home to more than ten other textile companies
producing fabrics, socks, clothing and other products. The exhibition presents the history of these companies and gives a voice to the people who worked in the industry. Open Tue–Fri from 12 noon to 3 pm. Photo: finna.fi
Pakkahuone Café: Tommi Flankkila’s exhibition Menneitä hetkiä (Old Times). The works are on display in the café’s

Cultural Centre Cruselli – Exhibition by Veera Ruohomäki Unikuvia.
Cruselli is open Tue–Wed and Fri from 10 am to 4 pm and Thu from 10 am to 6 pm. (Kullervontie 11A).
Runonkulma Gallery and Pikkukylän Puoti (Ylinenkatu 38B). Pikkukylän Puoti offers a good selection of Finnish handicrafts, design and art products. The gallery and shop are open Wed from 11 am to 7 pm, Thu–Fri from 11 am to 5 pm and Sat from 11 am to 3 pm.
Gallery Horisontti – Exhibition by Kyösti Hallikainen: Värit (Colours), with the latest works by members of the local art

Scale Model Exhibition (Kylähiidentie 55, Kalanti). The exhibition features around 80 miniature models of objects from the past, including cars, aeroplanes, motorcycles and ships, as well as a scale model of Tutankhamun’s tomb and Keke Rosberg’s world championship-winning car. Kalanti Library, Raimon Kammari: Uusikaupunki Art Association’s exhibition Näetkö näin? Works by Hiltu Sallinen, Heli Sammalisto, Valto Vaalikivi, Seija Itäranta, Tiina Kuusikoski and Kirsti Lento are on display until the end of September.

Museums

Automobile Museum (Autotehtaankatu 11) is one of Finland’s most significant car museums and one of Uusikaupunki’s most popular year-round attractions. Its three exhibition halls showcase classics of automotive history, the story of the Finnish
automotive industry and unique special exhibitions. Highlights include Korvensuu from 1913, the first car built in Finland, as well as an extensive collection of Saab cars.
Wahlberg Museum House (Ylinenkatu 11), open Tue–Fri from 12 noon to 3 pm. On the ground floor of the impressive former home of Fredrik Wahlberg, founder of the Uusikaupunki tobacco factory, you can discover what life was like in a bourgeois home during the golden age of seafaring. Upstairs, the exhibitions explore the town’s maritime history, from sailing ships and seafaring to modern shipbuilding and the shipyard industry.

Social dance class on Thursdays from 6 pm to 9 pm, Työväentalo, Ylinenkatu 12. Social dancing is a fun and effective form of exercise suitable for everyone. You can join the pay-per-session classes whenever it suits you, with no advance registration or commitment to a long course. Come on your own, with a partner or with friends. From the birdwatching platform, you can continue beyond the accessible section along a more challenging trail to the Kasarminlahti lean-to shelter or the Vionpuhti campfire site.
Pamprinniemi Nature Trail, Hauintie 259, Pyhämaa. The approximately 4 km long nature trail is located in Ketteli, Pyhämaa, on land owned by the parish.
Oinassaari Lean-to Shelter, Oinassaarentie 166. The Oinassaari lean-to is a pleasant destination for a trip by car, boat or bicycle. It is located on Korsaari island, approximately 18 km from the centre of Uusikaupunki in the direction of Lepäinen.
