The autumn equinox has already passed, and we are quickly heading towards the darkening autumn. Bringing light to the season are the abundant cultural offerings, museums, exhibitions, theaters, concerts, movies, diverse recreational opportunities, breathtaking nature, and the special programs of restaurants. The next couple of weeks are once again packed into one guide. Discover and enjoy the wonderful autumn in Uusikaupunki!

 

The New Church of Uusikaupunki is open on Thursdays from 4 PM to 6 PM. Volunteers ensure the church is available for personal reflection and quiet time.

At Uusikaupunki Theatre, the colorful twists and turns of sisters Camilla and Aurora are once again followed in the farce Lekaa ja leivoksia! (Sledgehammers and Pastries!). The money has been spent again, and they need to come up with something. The nephew Helmer and his wife, as well as the municipality and the EU, all get mixed up in the chaos. Buy tickets online or from the theatre office at 02 8451 5440 (Tue-Fri 9 AM - 1 PM). The next performances are on Saturday, September 28th at 1 PM and Saturday, October 5th at 1 PM. 

The Buster Haukitreffit -fishing competition will take place in the fish-rich waters of Uusikaupunki on Saturday, September 28th. The grand prize is a Buster Mini aluminum boat. Teams can participate with a maximum of three people per boat, and registration must be completed in advance by Tuesday, September 24th. The competition office will open at 8 AM at Café Aitta, and the skipper’s meeting will begin at 9 AM.

Singer, songwriter, and visual artist Anne Mattila is turning 40 this year and is embarking on a celebratory tour in honor of the occasion. In Uusikaupunki, Anne Mattila will perform at the Cruselli Cultural Center on Saturday, September 28th at 7 PM. In these unique anniversary concerts, alongside well-known songs like "Perutaan häät," "Asfalttiviidakko," and "Enkeleitä onko heitä," the audience will also get to hear some rarer tracks, offering an acoustic journey through the artist's long career.

Saxophonist Esa Pietilä will perform a concert on Sunday, September 29th at 6 PM in Uusikaupunki's New Church. Known as a bold improviser and musical visionary, Pietilä will present not only his own compositions but also excerpts from J.S. Bach's solo cello suites, incorporating improvisations and effects through live electronics, along with composed and improvised transitions between the sections of the cello suites.

The MLL Ipanamessi Tastes of the World evenings are free family-friendly events where participants can explore various cultures together! Attendees will dive into the world of different cultures in a variety of ways, depending on the evening and the featured culture. The next event will take place on Tuesday, October 1st at 5 PM. The traditional Uusikaupunki Autumn Market will take over Uusikaupunki's Market Square on Friday, October 4th from 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturday, October 5th from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Founded in 1994, Ultra Bra became one of the most significant generational experiences of our time. SUMU Big Band now embraces the long-standing idea of paying tribute to Ultra Bra. In the concert Lauluja Asioista – A Tribute to Ultra Bra on Friday, October 4th at 7 PM at the Cruselli Cultural Center, the talented singers Anna Karlsson, Pekka Kurki, Elisa Ockenström, Milla Ryytty, and Ari Setälä will perform. SUMU will be led by conductor Rami Koskinen, who also contributed to the creation of these big band arrangements.


The Splendor of a Bourgeois Home and the Golden Age of Maritime Trade

The former bourgeois home of the tobacco manufacturer, Wahlberg's Museum House, showcases the splendor of a bourgeois home of the past on the ground floor and the golden age of maritime trade on the upper floor. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 12 PM to 3 PM. 

Wahlberg's Museum House offers plenty of activities for young visitors as well. In the summer, the outbuilding features a popular children's play area, and in the yard, children can try walking on stilts or navigating a hobby horse obstacle course. Indoors, they can explore the museum like a detective, color pictures, such as electric locomotives, or play with toy trains.

The interior of Luotonen's cobbler workshop, which operated on Ketunkallio until the early 1980s, has been relocated to the museum's outbuilding and is on display whenever the museum is open.

In the three large exhibition halls of the Automobile Museum, the daydreams of both young and old car enthusiasts come true. The Minimaailma exhibition by the Raunistula Dollhouse Club entertains the whole family. The Automobile Museum is open daily from 11 AM to 5 PM. Group visits are available by appointment.
 

For Exhibition Lovers

The thematic exhibition "Tulisuitsuinen Hepo tulee - The 100-Year-Old Uusikaupunki Herring Railway" at the Wahlberg Museum House in Uusikaupunki delves into the design and construction of the Turku-Uusikaupunki railway, which is celebrating its centenary. The exhibition explores the trains and locomotives, as well as the railway's impact on daily life, other forms of transportation, trade, and industry.

The exhibition space at Pakkahuone guest harbor café features Susanna Pihlaja's exhibition "Tässä kohtaa." The exhibition introduces visitors to mythical characters and dream worlds. Pakkahuone café is open every day from 8 AM to 8 PM.
 
Runonkulma Gallery is an art gallery and lending service located in the wooden house district of the city center. The gallery hosts rotating exhibitions, events, courses, lectures, and private functions. It also houses Pikkukylän Puoti, a shop selling Finnish handmade crafts, design, and art products. Runonkulma Gallery is open on Wednesdays from 4 PM to 7 PM and Saturdays from 11 AM to 3 PM.

The September group exhibition "MARE" will feature stunning maritime art, including oil paintings, art prints, and mixed media works. The artists featured are Hiltu Sallinen, Heli Sammalisto, Valto Vaalikivi, and Katja Syrjä. 

Gallery-Art Lending Library Horizon offers delightful art experiences! The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 12 PM to 3 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. It features works by local Uusikaupunki artists as well as visiting artists. In addition to viewing art in the gallery, you can also borrow artworks from the art lending library at an affordable monthly rate to enjoy at home.

The exhibition AISTI VOIMA VIRTA by Anne Kuntsi and Ulla Kivimäki will be on display at the Cruselli Cultural Center from October 1st to November 15th. The works, primarily painted with acrylics, express the language of emotions through color, light, and movement. The exhibition is open Monday-Wednesday from 10 AM to 4 PM, Wednesday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM, as well as during the intermissions of events held at Cruselli.

Tupsula - The Land of Thousands of Pom-Poms Tupsula showcases unique works made from pom-poms, including new animal figures. The playful pom-pom creations have even spread to the exterior walls of the exhibition space. Tupsula is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 PM to 5 PM, and on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Entertainment at the restaurants

At Santtioranta Camping, the Santtioranta End-of-Season Party will be celebrated on Saturday, September 28th from 3 PM to 10 PM. The summer season finale will feature a bouncy castle and face painting for children from 3 PM to 6 PM, with musical entertainment starting at 4 PM by Luca Sturniolo and at 7 PM by Trio Kukkanen. The evening will be crowned with a fireworks display around 8 PM.

At Bar M’Uki, Alex Kunnari & Statement Album Tour will perform on Saturday, September 28th at 10 PM.

At Bistro Bay, kluBBen Dj will entertain on Saturday, September 28th at 10 PM.

Night Club Glow will host Oktoberfest feat. Oktobeerbabes on Saturday, September 28th at 10 PM, and on Saturday, October 5th at 10 PM, Live Stage/CScope - Iron Maiden Tribute/Dj Electro will take place.

At Public House Olkkari on Saturday, September 28th, the program includes Oktober-Bingo at 2:30 PM and the traditional beer & sausage relay. The Roots Trio will perform at 9:30 PM.

At Restaurant Wiku and Pikku-Wiku, karaoke will take place every Friday from 10 PM to 12:30 AM, and on Saturday, September 28th at 6 PM, Oktoberfest will be celebrated with music by Miss Blue & Blue Balls.

 

Joy of exercise

In the Uusikaupunki swimming hall, you can swim every day. In addition to the pool area, under the same roof, you'll find a café, a gym, a judo hall, and a fun water slide for the more adventurous.

Sunday public skating sessions are starting again at the Uusikaupunki Ice Hall. Public skating is available every Sunday from 10 AM to 11 AM, but games may alter the schedule.

Everyone is welcome to join the community mountain biking rides held on Sundays at 6 PM. These rides are accessible to beginners and first-timers are warmly encouraged to join. The routes are adjusted according to the participants' skill levels.

Padel Uusikaupunki offers excellent facilities for playing the highly popular sport of padel right in the city center. Two competition-level, LED-lit courts are located on the shore of Kaupunginlahti in Crusell Park, close to all amenities. Individual court slots can be booked for an hour or longer, and regular players can reserve fixed slots for ongoing practice.
Right next to the padel courts, a new basketball court is available for everyone to use freely.

Enjoy cheerful golf by the sea. Uusikaupunki has a full-sized 18-hole golf course is uniquely situated right by the seaside and almost in the city center.

Uusikaupunki Skate Park is a popular destination for skating enthusiasts, offering a variety of ramps, rails, and other features suitable for skaters of all skill levels. Located conveniently near the city center, it provides an excellent venue for both beginners and experienced skaters to practice their skills and enjoy the sport in a vibrant community setting. The park is a great place for outdoor activity, socializing, and honing skateboarding techniques. Skate Park is located by the end of Kaupunginlahti.

A piece of Finland's most beautiful archipelago is accessible on this route without needing a boat or worrying about ferry schedules, thanks to the road built through the islands. Drive the entire 50-kilometer route in one go or savor the archipelago atmosphere at a leisurely pace. The Velhovesi Ring Road takes you through the northern archipelago of Uusikaupunki, around the freshwater basin.

 

Swimming is available daily at the Haimio public sauna until October 4th. The winter swimming season at Haimio will begin on Saturday, October 5th. Winter swimming will take place every Saturday from 4 PM to 7 PM, but you must arrive at the sauna by 5:30 PM at the latest. The sauna is managed and maintained by the Kalanti Jokisivu Youth Association. Winter swimming has a fee.

Until Tuesday, September 24th, summer swimming is available at the Metsälehto sauna from 6 PM to 8 PM. The sauna is spacious and provides excellent steam. It's pleasant to take a dip in the water from the pier, but you can also enter the water directly from the shore. Swimming has a fee. The winter swimming season at Metsälehto starts on October 6th, after which swimming will be available every Sunday from 4 PM to 6 PM.

You can experience nature on the Pamprinniemi nature trail in Pyhämaa. In the city center, Hiunjärvi, known for its birdlife, offers nature trails and a lean-to shelter. For an accessible outdoor trail and bird-watching tower, you can hike from the sports field parking area to Kasarminlahti. There is also a lean-to shelter near the trail. Another great destination is the Oinassaaren lean-to shelter in Korsaari, located about 18 kilometers from Uusikaupunki towards Lepäinen. Pack some grillable treats in your backpack and head out!
 

For movie enthusiasts, the program of Cinema Kuvala, one of Finland's oldest cinemas celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, is available. You can explore the program and purchase tickets in advance on Kuvala's own website.
