Library Events

kärpässienitalo
On Monday, November 10th from 5 to 8 pm, the library will host a reading session for young people and adults as a part of the Nordic Literature Week. This year’s theme is “Togetherness in the North.” On the Reading Outloud Day, November 10th, people of all ages across the Nordic and Baltic countries gather in schools and libraries to listen to the same texts being read aloud. This year’s selected book is Andvake (Wakefulness, 2007), a Norwegian novel by Jon Fosse. Throughout the week, schools and libraries across the Nordic and Baltic regions will be filled with reading, exhibitions, discussions, and cultural experiences celebrating literature and shared stories.

This autumn, Uusikaupunki Main Library is hosting a special “Read to a Dog” sessions, designed for primary school–aged children. The first session in November takes place on Thursday, November 20th at 6 pm. The dogs will be waiting in the library’s event space, where each young readers will have their own cozy reading corner separated by the screens. At every session, two friendly dogs are there to listen. Children can read picture books, comics, fairy tales, or nonfiction — whatever they like! The dog is a patient listener, who also enjoys being petted and given a treat. Each reading session lasts about 5 to 10 minutes, and readers take turns in the order of arrival (please note that you might need to wait a little for your turn).

The beautifully renovated and restored main library building itself is also well worth to visit!

History will live in the museums

Museo
Wahlberg’s House Museum (Ylinenkatu 11) is located in the town’s grid plan area, surrounded by charming wooden houses. Fredrik Wahlberg, the founder of the Uusikaupunki tobacco factory, had this impressive residence built for himself in the early 1870s. The rooms still feature their original ornate tiled stoves and beautifully painted ceilings, and in the salon, even the hand-painted wallpaper from over 150 years ago has been preserved. Upstairs, the museum showcases the building, outfitting, and operation of sailing ships, as well as the city’s maritime trade. Sailors’ chests, souvenirs, ship paintings, and a captain’s navigation instruments tell fascinating stories of maritime past in Uusikaupunki.
Children can play detective and complete exhibition-related tasks during their visit. The museum offers a glimpse into both
maritime history and bourgeois life, and it's open on Tuesday to Friday from noon to 3 pm.

Museo näyttely
The exhibition “Among the First – Women of Uusikaupunki in a Man’s World” at Wahlberg’s Museum House presents 13 local women from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who were pioneers in professions officially reserved for men. Such professions included, for example, organists and doctors. Many of these women also engaged in activities that were not yet considered
suitable for women, such as hunting or sailing. The exhibition is open during the museum’s regular opening hours until late March 2026.

The Uusikaupunki Museum’s “Museum Without Walls” mobile guides offer fascinating insights into the city’s past. The museum has published 12 mobile tour routes that can be used on smartphones, tablets, or desktop computers. With the guide, you can follow in the footsteps of composer Bernhard Crusell, explore the era of the Great Northern War, or visit sites connected to the Peace of Uusikaupunki. More tours can be found in the Uusikaupunki events calendar, and all the “Museum Without Walls” guides, and they are available on the Tarinasoitin website.

Korvensuu
Located on Autotehtaankatu, the Automobile Museum is open daily from 11 am to 5 pm. Across three halls, the museum showcases more than a hundred vehicles — from classic cars to futuristic concept models, as well as motorcycles and even an airplane.
A place of honor is given to Korvensuu, the first Finnish car, built in Mynämäki in 1913. The museum also features the first Saab ever produced at the Uusikaupunki car factory, completed on November 13th, 1969. This Saab 96 model was presented to President Urho Kekkonen and carried the license plate EKA-96. Other Saabs on display include older models built in Trollhättan, Sweden — among them the first Saab registered in Finland, a Saab 92 from 1950.
Visitors can also explore a restoration workshop and a museum shop. In addition, the museum hosts an art exhibition from a Finnish collector’s private collection, featuring works by artists such as Juhani Palmu and Pekka Laiho.
