What’s On in Early September, 1–6 Sep 2026

September gets off to a lively start in Uusikaupunki with a wide variety of events! During the first week of the month, you can peek inside charming wooden homes and gardens, enjoy music and art, and take part in a range of cultural and leisure activities. There is something for everyone, from history and old-house enthusiasts to those who enjoy music, art and spending time together.

The much-anticipated Uusikaupunki Old Houses event kicks off the autumn season on the first weekend of September. 
The weekend also features a renovation and restoration event as well as a flea market. Early September also brings a varied 
programme at the library, new exhibitions and plenty of opportunities to get active. A great way to start the autumn season!
 

Uusikaupunki Old Houses Weekend, 5–6 September, 10–18

During the Uusikaupunki Old Houses Weekend, you can step inside beautiful historic homes and discover the stories behind them. Participating houses are easy to spot by the UVT signs and balloons at their gates.

Most of the participating houses are private homes, so please keep a few things in mind when visiting. Be prepared to remove your shoes in the entrance hall or use the shoe covers available at the ticket sales points. Not all rooms may be open to visitors, so please follow the signs and instructions at each location. The owners are happy to tell you about their homes, their history and renovation projects, so feel free to chat with them. You can explore the participating houses in advance here.

Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Uusikaupunki Old Houses online shop and from the Tourist Information Office (Rauhankatu 10), which is open Mon–Fri 10–15 and during the event weekend on Sat 10–16 and Sun 10–15.

For the first time, the Old Houses Weekend will also feature a Renovation and Restoration Fair and the Old Houses Treasure Market.
 

Renovation and Restoration Fair, 4–5 September

Held in the courtyard of Kasvi House (Liljalaaksonkatu 10), in the heart of city´s idyllic wooden-house district, the Renovation and Restoration Fair offers useful tips for anyone interested in preserving and renovating an old house with respect for its original character. Visitors can learn about traditional techniques and materials and meet experts in the field. Around 20 exhibitors will take part in the fair.

On Friday at 12 noon, Markku from Laitila will give a demonstration on repairing a traditional wooden shingle roof. On Saturday at 12, singer Hanna Pakarinen will join renovation expert Mikko Kallioinen to ask for advice on renovating her recently purchased cottage in Kustavi.

The event is open on Fri 10–18 and Sat 10–16.
 

Old Houses Treasure Market, 5–6 September, 10–15

During the Uusikaupunki Old Houses Weekend, the Market Square is the perfect place to hunt for flea market finds or sell items you no longer need. Old furniture, tableware, decorative items, building materials, and retro and vintage treasures are particularly well suited to the spirit of the event, but all kinds of items are welcome. Selling is free of charge and no advance booking is 
required. You can sell from the boot of your car, a trailer, your own table or simply spread your items out on a blanket. Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Several yard sales will also be held around the town during the weekend.
 

Guided Tour of the Library

Uusikaupunki Library is housed in an impressive wooden building near the Market Square and Rauhanpuisto Park. The building was originally completed as a school in 1854, and it has served as a library since 1957. Between 2020 and 2025, the building 
underwent an extensive renovation, with interiors, wallpapers and furnishings carefully selected to reflect the period and character of the historic building.

The library is open only on Saturday from 10 to 14.

The guided tours are free of charge, and they are conducted in Finnish.

In Manta’s Footsteps – Discovering Uusikaupunki’s Sauna Traditions, Sat 5 September at 18

Join washerwoman Manta on a themed guided walking tour exploring the history of Uusikaupunki’s traditional neighbourhood saunas. Along the way, you will hear stories about old saunas, their visitors and sauna customs of days gone by. The tour starts and ends at the Pietola sports field car park, Viikaistenkatu 11 B. Please note that the route includes some hilly streets. Guidance is in Finnish.

The Old Church, Sat–Sun 5–6 September

On Saturday, 5 September, from 12 noon to 15 pm, visitors will also have the opportunity to climb the church tower and enjoy views over Uusikaupunki. Registration begins at the church at 11:45, and groups will climb the tower with a guide every 20 
minutes. A maximum of five people can join each group, with a total of 45 places available.

Visitors with a Uusikaupunki Old Houses event ticket will be given priority, but any remaining places will also be available to 
others. The minimum age for visiting the tower is 7 years, and children aged 7–14 must be accompanied by an adult guardian. Visitors climb the tower at their own risk.

Admission to the church is free throughout the weekend, and a summer guide will be available on both days to tell visitors about the history of the church. (Alinenkatu 44).

Wallila Manor, Sun 6 September, 12–6 pm

As part of the Vanhat Talot (Old Houses) event, Kirsi Helminen will present her jewellery collection, including the new Kodin sydän (Heart of the Home) window ornament and Pyhäranta anchor cross, which will be unveiled for the first time. Also on display will be her own range of laser-engraved products, including cork trivets, slate sauna thermometers and hip flasks. 
The Nystars TU16 girls’ team will also be running a pop-up café.
 

Open Doors at Radansuu Mill, Sun 6 September, 15–19

For the second time this year, visitors have the opportunity to explore the historic watermill, built in the 19th century in the village of Radansuu in Pyhäranta. A small pop-up café will also be open at the mill, where you can enjoy Sunday coffee in the charming surroundings. Please bring some cash with you.

Please note that the mill is accessed via a fairly steep ramp and there are steep stairs inside. Visitors enter the mill at their own risk, and children must be supervised by their parents. (Radansuuntie 176, Uusikaupunki).

Other events

• Author Markku Ropponen visits the Main Library Tue 1 Sep at 18, Alinenkatu 34. During the evening, Ropponen will discuss his latest novel Kuhala ja karmea kasarikesä, as well as his other works and creative process. The author will also read an 
  excerpt from the book, and the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions. Free admission.
• Baby Rhymes Wed 2 Sep at 9:30, Main Library, Alinenkatu 34. Enjoy traditional and more recent nursery rhymes together with parents, grandparents or godparents. The session also includes familiar children’s songs.
• Storytime Thu 3 Sep at 9:30, Uusikaupunki Main Library, Alinenkatu 34. A storytime session for children under the age of 2 accompanied by a parent or carer. During the half-hour session, picture books based on different themes will be read aloud.
• Outdoor Movies Fri 4 Sep from 19:00, Wintteri car park, Pohjoistullitie 3. Two films will be screened during the evening. The first is Madagascar (2005), age rating 7, at 19. At 21, Superman (2025), age rating 12, will be shown. You can watch the films from your own vehicle, from a picnic blanket or from the seating area. The Youth Council will offer candy floss at the beginning of the films. Free admission!
• Firewood Work Party at Metsälehto Sat 5 Sep, 12–16, Haimiontie 365. Volunteers will move firewood stored outdoors into the woodshed – and once the work is done, the sauna will be heated. Weather permitting. To help with catering arrangements, please register with Jussi, tel. 041 462 5677.
• Hobby Horse Festival Sun 6 Sep, 12–15, Wasaborg Stable, Lokalahdentie 200. This family event features hobby horse show jumping competitions with prizes, a bouncy castle, a craft station, refreshments and a raffle. The participation fee is lower if you register in advance: wasaborginhevosurheilijat@outlook.com. The event is organised by Wasaborgin Hevosurheilijat ry in cooperation with the South-West Finland regional section of the Equestrian Federation of Finland.

Note that the library events will be hosted in Finnish language.

Restaurant Bistro Bay & Pulperi, Aittaranta 10–12.
Every Saturday from 22 onwards, the restaurant transforms into kluBBen – the place to be for a laid-back club night. At kluBBen, you can enjoy the music, relax and let loose in a casual atmosphere. Around midnight, the lights dim, the disco ball starts spinning and the night really gets going.

Pub Myöhäne: DJ Daddy Pales Fri 4 Sep, 22–01, Erkontie 8, Lokalahti. DJ Daddy Pales, aka Paleface, arrives at Myöhäne for its first-ever DJ night. A long-time DJ and passionate record collector, he will serve up a genre-crossing set featuring classics, rare gems and fresh tracks guaranteed to fill the dance floor.

New Church, Rauhankatu 3.
Open on Thursdays from 16 to 18. In the chancel, you will find a prayer altar and a candle stand, where you can light a small taper or candle if you wish.

Exhibitions

• Pakkahuone Café: Tommi Flankkila’s exhibition Menneitä hetkiä (Moments Gone By). The works are on display in the café’s exhibition space. Open daily from 8 to 20. (Pakkahuoneentori 1).
• Cruselli Cultural Centre – Kustavi Art Association’s exhibition Meidän Isokari – Meriveden makuista taidetta (Our Isokari – Art with a Taste of the Sea). Cruselli is open Tue–Wed and Fri from 10 to 16 and Thu from 10 to 18. (Kullervontie 11A). The exhibition is open until 4 September. On Tuesday, 8 September, Veera Ruohomäki’s exhibition Unikuvia (Dream Images) opens.
• Runonkulma Gallery and Pikkukylä Shop (Ylinenkatu 38B). The gallery hosts Ann-Sofi Kattilakoski’s exhibition Pientä mutta suurta (Small but Significant), featuring graphic art. Pikkukylä Shop offers a good selection of Finnish handicrafts, 
  design and art products. The gallery and shop are open Wed from 11 to 19, Thu–Fri from 11 to 17 and Sat from 11 to 15.
• Gallery Horisontti – Kyösti Hallikainen’s exhibition Värit (Colours), while the studio features the latest works by members of the local Art Association. Open Wed–Fri from 12 to 15 and Sat from 10 to 13. (Alinenkatu 24).
• Vilttejä ja vaatteita – Made in Uusikaupunki (Blankets and Clothes – Made in Uusikaupunki) exhibition, Wahlberg’s Museum House, Ylinenkatu 11.
  Uusikaupunki’s textile industry flourished particularly from the 1940s to the 1960s and employed a large number of women, although the town’s first textile factory had already been established in 1919. The most significant company in the industry, Uudenkaupungin villatavaratehdas (later Uuvi Oy), operated until 1987. The town was also home to more than ten other textile companies producing fabrics, socks, clothing and other products. The exhibition explores the history of these companies and gives a voice to the people who worked in the industry.
  The exhibition is open Tue–Fri from 12 to 15, and Sat–Sun at the Old Houses weekend from 12 to 16 with free admission.
• Uusikaupunki Library, Gallery Kirjava: Elisa Haapasalo’s exhibition, featuring nature-themed watercolours. The exhibition opens on Tuesday, 1 September. The library is open Mon–Thu from 10 to 18, Fri from 10 to 17 and Sat from 10 to 14. (Alinenkatu 34). Respectfully renovated to preserve its historic character, the Main Library combines a historic setting with modern library services.
• Kalanti Library, Raimon Kammari: exhibition by the Uusikaupunki Art Association. The library is open Tue from 13 to 19 and Wed–Fri from 10 to 16. (Pankkitie 2, Kalanti).

Museums

• Wahlberg’s Museum House (Ylinenkatu 11), open Tue–Fri from 12 to 15. During the Old Houses Weekend on 5–6 September, the museum is open from 12 to 16 with free admission. Museum staff will also have their own flea market stalls in the 
  courtyard during the weekend. The outbuilding also houses a shoemaker’s workshop and a children’s play area.
• Pilot Museum (Mäyhälänkatu 2B) and Sailor’s Home Museum (Myllykatu 20) are open on 5–6 September from 12 to 16. 
  Free admission.

• Uusikaupunki Automobile Museum (Autotehtaankatu 11), open daily from 11 to 17. The Automobile Museum is one of Finland’s most significant car museums and one of Uusikaupunki’s most popular year-round attractions. Its three exhibition halls showcase classics from automotive history, the story of the Finnish automotive industry and unique special exhibitions. Highlights of the collection include Korvensuu, the first car built in Finland, dating from 1913, as well as an extensive collection of Saab cars.

   

Cruises to Isokari Island

• Fitness Class every Monday from 13 to 14, Wintteri group exercise room, Pohjoistullitie 3. An easy functional workout 
  designed especially for older adults, but suitable for all ages. Training varies from circuit training to a workout of the day and makes versatile use of equipment and bodyweight exercises. No jumping. Instructor fee €6.50.
• Water Aerobics for Seniors every Monday and Wednesday from 15 to 15:45, Swimming Pool, Pohjoistullitie 3. A basic water aerobics class open to everyone and particularly aimed at seniors. The class includes aerobic exercise, muscle-strengthening exercises and stretching at the end. Various aquatic exercise equipment is also used from time to time. No advance booking required. Swimming fee + instructor fee €3.50.
• Shoulders, Back & Abs every Monday from 16:30 to 17:30, Wintteri group exercise room, Pohjoistullitie 3. An easy and 
  effective basic exercise class with no step combinations or jumping. The class includes a warm-up, a varied 
  muscle-strengthening section and stretching. Focusing particularly on the back, shoulders and abdominal muscles, the class is suitable for everyone, especially those who do sedentary work. Instructor fee €6.50.
• Water Circuit Training every Monday from 18 to 18:45, Swimming Pool, Pohjoistullitie 3. An effective circuit workout in the water that raises your heart rate and improves overall fitness. Various aquatic exercise equipment is used during the class. The session ends with a short stretching section. No advance booking required. Swimming fee + instructor fee €3.50.
• Fitness Boxing every Monday from 18 to 19, Wintteri budo hall, Pohjoistullitie 3. Fitness boxing is an effective and versatile form of exercise suitable for everyone. The class includes technique practice with focus mitts and punching bags, as well as 
  exercises to improve muscular and aerobic fitness. There is no contact to the head or hard body contact. Please note that shoes are not worn in the budo hall. Instructor fee €6.50.
• Sweat Workout every Tuesday from 17:30 to 18:30, Wintteri athletics area, Pohjoistullitie 3. An effective and varied functional workout combining mobility, strength and cardio exercises, as well as jumping and running. Instructor fee €6.50.
• Adapted Gym Workout every Wednesday from 10 to 11, Wintteri, Pohjoistullitie 3. An adapted gym workout for people who find it challenging to participate in general exercise groups. The class includes a warm-up, self-paced gym training and 
  stretching at the end. An instructor is available to assist throughout the session. Participants requiring additional support must bring their own assistant. The class is free of charge.
• Strength and Balance Group every Wednesday from 11 to 11:45, Wintteri Uusikaupunki Arena, Pohjoistullitie 3. An 
  easy-access exercise group designed to maintain and improve functional ability. The class focuses on muscle strength, mobility and balance using bodyweight exercises and equipment. Exercises are adapted to each participant’s level of ability, and the use of mobility aids does not prevent participation. The class is free of charge.
• Open Supervised Gym Session every Wednesday at 13, Wintteri, Pohjoistullitie 3. Supervised gym training with an instructor available to assist with equipment and exercises. The session includes a short warm-up, self-paced gym training and stretching at the end. Gym admission fee applies; no instructor fee.
• Power 45 Water Aerobics every Wednesday at 18, Swimming Pool, Pohjoistullitie 3. An energetic water aerobics class to 
  to the rhythm of the music. The class includes heart-rate-raising aerobic exercise, muscle-strengthening exercises and a short stretching section at the end. Various aquatic exercise equipment is also used from time to time. No advance booking

• Hiunjärvi Outdoor Trail, starting from the Saarnisto School car park, Pajusuontie.
• Kasarminlahti Trail, the marked trail starts from the Sports Field car park at Etelälinjakatu 2, while the accessible section starts at Kasarminlahdentie 8. From the birdwatching platform, you can continue beyond the accessible section along a more demanding trail to the Kasarminlahti lean-to shelter or the Vionpuhti campfire site.
• Pamprinniemi Nature Trail, Hauintie 259, Pyhämaa. The approximately 4 km Pamprinniemi Nature Trail is located in Ketteli, Pyhämaa, on land owned by the parish.
• Oinassaari Lean-to Shelter, Oinassaarentie 166. Oinassaari is a pleasant excursion destination for visitors travelling by car, boat or bicycle. It is located on Korsaari Island, approximately 18 km from the centre of Uusikaupunki in the direction of Lepäinen.
