There’s plenty going on around the city in early October!
The programme includes culture, music, exercise and enjoyable activities to share with others. Older People’s Week offers a wide range of events for seniors, while at the Cruselli Cultural Centre the whole family can enjoy a journey into the atmosphere of Argentina. Concerts feature everything from the music of Jimi Hendrix to the wistful sounds of Karelia and songs from the wartime years.
For those who enjoy staying active, there’s a touch of 1980s nostalgia with an 80s-themed workout led by Anne Sällylä, as well as opportunities to relax and recharge with yoga and a jewellery workshop. Winter swimming also begins at both Haimio Sauna and Metsälehto Sauna.

- Room Full of Hendrix: 60 Years of Jimi Hendrix Fri 9 Oct at 7 pm.
It has been 60 years since Jimi Hendrix’s breakthrough, and Room Full of Hendrix celebrates the rock legend’s legacy with an energetic concert tour. The programme features familiar classics, rarely heard songs and plenty of Hendrix spirit. - Journey Abroad – Argentina Sat 10 Oct from 10 am to 2 pm.
Discover Argentinian culture through dance, music and a varied programme. Children can enjoy free face painting and puppet theatre. During the day, visitors can also taste and learn more about Argentinian food culture. Free admission. - Longing for Karelia and Songs from the Wartime Years Sun 11 Oct at 2 pm.
Turku KaraokeKlubi’s musical play takes the audience back to the wartime years through songs and stories based on authentic field post letters. The performance also features Finnish national costumes and Lotta uniforms. Free admission, with coffee served before the event.

- Sing Along at Ystävän Tupa (Alinenkatu 26) Mon 5 Oct at 1 pm, bingo. The event is free and open to everyone. Ystävän Tupa, run by the Cancer Society and the Finnish Red Cross, is open on Mondays from 10 am.
- Older People’s Week Celebration at Cruselli Mon 5 Oct from 1 to 4 pm, Kullervontie 11. The celebration will be opened by Marketta Suoja-Sjöblom, Chair of the Council for Older People, with a greeting from Mayor Atso Vainio. The programme also includes performances by the 1st and 2nd grade music classes and a festive speech by Social Counsellor Pekka Paatero. Free admission, with complimentary coffee served at the end of the event. The event is organised by the Uusikaupunki Council for Older People.
- Literature Circle Mon 5 Oct from 4 to 5 pm, Main Library, Alinenkatu 34. In October, the group will discuss The Whale Rider by New Zealand author Witi Ihimaera. The event is free of charge. Register in advance: uusi.opistopalvelut.fi/vakkaopisto (in Finnish)

- Read to a Pet – Vakka-Suomen karvakaverit Tue 6 Oct from 5 to 6 pm, Kalanti Library, Pankkitie 2. Two listening dogs will be present at each session, and you can read them picture books, storybooks or even non-fiction. Each reading session lasts approximately 5–10 minutes, and readers are welcomed in order of arrival.

Tickets in advance: www.kuvatahti.fi - Lecture: Pyhämaa Sacrificial Church – a Unique Miraculous Sanctuary Tue 6 Oct from 6 to 7.30 pm, Wintteri, lower secondary school, Languages Classroom 1, Viikaistenkatu 3. Pyhämaa Sacrificial Church is one of the few surviving wooden churches in Finland dating from the 17th century. The lecture explores the church’s history, magnificent paintings, artefacts and fascinating stories, as well as why the church has been regarded as a place of miracles. Heavy metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) loses his hearing and has to learn a new way of living and communicating. The film is directed by Darius Marder and has an age rating of 12. Free admission. Kino Rauha is Uusikaupunki Library’s film club, where films from the Vaski Libraries collection are screened together. The event is free and open to everyone.
- Lecture: Lapland – Land of Wonders Wed 7 Oct from 6 to 7.30 pm, Wintteri, lower secondary school, Humanities and Science Classroom 3, Viikaistenkatu 3. Lapland attracts visitors throughout the year. The Northern Lights and ski trails in winter, nature experiences in summer and colourful autumn foliage make it one of Finland’s most attractive travel destinations. Northern Lights tourism in particular has grown rapidly in popularity. The lecture is given by Antti Karlin (in Finnish). Admission fee. Register in advance: uusi.opistopalvelut.fi/vakkaopisto
- Storytime Thu 8 Oct at 9.30 am, Kalanti Library, Pankkitie 2. Picture books based on different themes are read during the storytime session. Children under the age of 2 should attend with a parent or caregiver.
- New Church (Rauhankatu 3), open on Thursdays from 4 to 6 pm. In the chancel area, you will find a prayer altar and a candle stand, where you can light a taper or candle if you wish. The Gothic-style church was completed in 1865 and designed by architect Georg Theodor Chiewitz. Free admission.
- World Mental Health Day Event Fri 9 Oct from 5 to 7 pm, Café Paapuuri, Alinenkatu 23. The Vakka-Suomi Mental Health Association invites everyone to an open event with complimentary coffee and something sweet. Päivi Kurkilahti will perform, bringing cheerful, uplifting music and sing-along songs to the evening.
- Ceramics Night Fri 9 Oct at 8 pm, Runonkulma Gallery, Ylinenkatu 38B. Enjoy a relaxed evening working with clay, where you can bring your own ideas to life and receive tips and guidance if needed. Light snacks will be served, and you are also welcome to bring your own food and drinks. The participation fee of €70 includes instruction, ceramic firing and glazing service. - Charity Concert Sun 11 Oct at 2 pm, New Church, Rauhankatu 3. Performers include Jaana Vasama, Joy Babatunde, Jeremi Karlsson, Konstantin Kosheliev, Minna Bergström, Anna Shupik and Elisa Vähäsarja. Free admission.

Exhibitions
- Uusikaupunki Library; Gallery Kirjava, Alinenkatu 34. Heli Jalava’s colourful acrylic paintings bring joy to the whole family in the exhibition Moments of Joy.
- Blankets and Clothes – Made in Uusikaupunki exhibition, Wahlberg’s Museum House, Ylinenkatu 11.
Uusikaupunki’s textile industry flourished particularly from the 1940s to the 1960s and employed a large number of women,
although the city’s first textile factory had already been established in 1919. The most significant company in the industry, Uudenkaupungin villatavaratehdas (later Uuvi Oy), operated until 1987. There were also more than ten other textile companies in the city, producing fabrics, socks and clothing, among other products. The exhibition presents the history of these
companies and gives a voice to the people who worked in the industry. The exhibition is open Tue–Fri from 12 noon to 3 pm. - Cruselli Cultural Centre – Veera Ruohomäki’s exhibition Dream Images on display until 9 Oct.
Cruselli is open Tue–Wed and Fri from 10 am to 4 pm and Thu from 10 am to 6 pm. (Kullervontie 11A). - Runonkulma Gallery and Pikkukylä Shop (Ylinenkatu 38B). Raimo Mattsson’s exhibition Beneath the Surface opens on Wed 7 Oct. The exhibition opening, which is open to everyone, will be held on Tue 6 Oct at 6 pm. The shop also offers a good
selection of Finnish handicrafts, design items and art. The gallery and shop are open Wed from 11 am to 7 pm, Thu–Fri from 11 am to 5 pm and Sat from 11 am to 3 pm. - Gallery Horisontti – open Thu–Fri from 12 noon to 3 pm and Sat from 10 am to 1 pm. (Alinenkatu 24).
- Scale Model Exhibition (Kylähiidentie 55, Kalanti). The exhibition features around 80 miniature models of objects from the past, including cars, aeroplanes, motorcycles and ships, as well as a miniature version of Tutankhamun’s tomb and Keke Rosberg’s world championship-winning car.

Museums
- Uusikaupunki Automobile Museum (Autotehtaankatu 11), open daily from 11 am to 5 pm. The Automobile Museum is one of Finland’s most significant car museums and one of the city’s most popular year-round attractions. Its three exhibition halls showcase classics of automotive history, the story of the Finnish automotive industry and unique special exhibitions. Highlights of the collection include the first car built in Finland, the 1913 Korvensuu, as well as an extensive collection of Saab cars.
- Wahlberg’s Museum House (Ylinenkatu 11), open Tue–Fri from 12 noon to 3 pm. On the ground floor of the impressive
former home of Fredrik Wahlberg, founder of the Uusikaupunki tobacco factory, visitors can discover what life was like in a wealthy merchant’s home during the golden age of seafaring. The upper floor presents the city’s maritime history, from sailing ships and seafaring to more recent shipbuilding and shipyard activities.

- Lavis dance workout Wed 30 September at 7 pm, Elleni, Ainonkuja 5. Vakka-Suomen Selkäyhdistys offers a free Lavis trial class. The class is open to everyone.
- Social dance class on Thursdays from 6 pm to 9 pm, Työväentalo, Ylinenkatu 12. Social dancing is a fun and effective form of exercise suitable for everyone. You can join the pay-per-session classes whenever it suits you, with no advance registration or commitment to a long course. Come on your own, with a partner or with friends. Changing partners during the class is optional, so you can dance with the same partner throughout if you prefer. Organised by Tanssiseura Sekahaku.
- October Sound Bath Fri 2 October at 6 pm, Studio Hyvinvoinnin Palikat, Tammitie 2. This deeply relaxing sound bath helps calm the body and mind with instruments such as drums, gongs and singing bowls. Dress comfortably and come enjoy a peaceful moment. Price €17/person. - Metsälehto Sauna, Haimiontie 365. Winter swimming on Sundays from 3 pm to 5 pm. The sauna is located on the shore of the freshwater basin, with easy access to the water via steps from the pier. - Hiunjärvi Outdoor Trail, starting from the Saarnisto School car park, Pajusuontie.
- Kasarminlahti Trail, the marked trail starts from the Sports Ground car park at Etelälinjakatu 2, while the accessible section starts at Kasarminlahdentie 8. From the birdwatching platform, you can continue beyond the accessible section along a more challenging trail to the Kasarminlahti lean-to shelter or the Vionpuhti campfire site.
- Pamprinniemi Nature Trail, Hauintie 259, Pyhämaa. The approximately 4 km long nature trail is located in Ketteli, Pyhämaa, on land owned by the parish.
- Oinassaari Lean-to Shelter, Oinassaarentie 166. The Oinassaari lean-to is a pleasant destination for a trip by car, boat or bicycle. It is located on Korsaari island, approximately 18 km from the centre of Uusikaupunki in the direction of Lepäinen.
