Tips what to see and do in Uusikaupunki from July 24th to July 30th, 2023
At the end of July there's an absolutely delightful array of various events in Uusikaupunki. Music enthusiasts can indulge in the ongoing Crusell Week offerings; high-quality concerts, the "Päivän Puhallus" (Fanfare of the day) event held at the market square, and the programmatic picnic concert known as "Lyhtyjen Yö" (Night of Lanterns). Below is a compilation of recommendations from the entire week's event lineup. Save the tips and participate in all of them if you like!
The week kicks off again with children's programs. On Monday, at Santtioranta Camping's Children's Day, from 2 pm to 6 pm, there will be various activities for kids at the camping area, and they are also allowed to bounce to their heart's content in the bouncy castle. The Crusell Week has also taken children into account, and there is a special "Wild Fun" movie concert for the whole family, set to the rhythm of the Children's Music Orchestra Loiskis.
Myllymuori's entertaining children's picnics are organized at Myllymäki on Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 11 am in collaboration with the Finnish Society Foundation.
The entire week features a unique woodwind festival called Crusell Week, resonating with the theme "Dreams of Tomorrow." This music week is filled with magnificent concerts set in various stunning venues, such as the Old Church, Wallila Manor, and the Crusell Cultural Center. As usual, you can enjoy free "Fanfare of the Day" (Päivän puhallukset) at the market square every day at 12 pm. Crusell Week collaborates with WWF Finland, and for each ticket sold, one euro is donated to the protection of the Baltic Sea. The Wednesday evening market at Pakkahuone offers more than just a marketplace and flea market vendors. There is always music-filled entertainment available as well. This week, the music will be provided by KasKasKas band. In addition, the Pakkahuone café showcases art from the Vakka-Suomi Art Association, providing a delightful experience for visitors.
The Street Fishing -fishing competition docks at Kaupunginlahti Bay on Wednesday, starting at 5 pm. In the two-person team competition, participants will compete for the title of Uusikaupunki Street Fisher 2023, and the winners of the competition will also qualify for the selection of the Street Fisher of the Year based on their results.
On Thursday, July 27th, from 4 pm to 6 pm, we'll be getting into the atmosphere of the evening's "Night of Lanterns" during the week's "Action Thursday." Johanna will guide lantern decoration in Rauhanpuisto (Peace Park), and the pre-party ambiance will be set by Eero Laurell & Ida Kallioinen, along with the participants of the Crusell Week courses.
In addition to delicious food, you can also enjoy live music at the restaurants. On Bistro Bay's terrace, Sami Saari will entertain on Wednesday, Trio Kukkanen on Friday, and UKIBIZA on Saturday. Captain's Makasiini offers live music by Olli Leppärinne on Wednesday, Kalle and Susse on Thursday, Jore Marjaranta on Friday, and Duo Kaikkonen & Liekkala on Saturday. At Restaurant Kirsta, bingo evenings are held on Fridays, followed by karaoke. Bingo Friday takes place at Pakkahuone market place from 4 pm to 6 pm, and at Pakkahuone Terassi's after-work event, you can listen to Sauli Soini and Samuli Mannila. On Saturday, at Santtioranta Camping, the beautiful-voiced Sanna Arell takes care of the live music offering.
On Friday, July 28th, at Männäinen market square, in addition to market sales and a popup café, there will be delightful music provided by Petri Hatakka and Jukitsu Hyytiä.
The "Tul toril" themed markets continue on Saturday, July 29th, with a Cultural theme. The program includes performances by Sanni Winter, Odelia & Sami, Improvisation Group "Tyhjä Tuoli" (Empty Chair), and, of course, the "Päivän Puhallus" event. The Crusell Women's Café will be open daily throughout the music week from 9 am to 2 pm.
You can also spend your vacation day at sea. The cozy M/S Kerttu offers cruises on Mondays and Tuesdays to the southernmost destination of the Archipelago Sea National Park, Katanpää Fortress Island. The magnificent lighthouse island of Isokari is visited by Kerttu on a weekly basis, from Wednesday to Sunday. On Friday evenings, you can also join a two-hour guided sightseeing cruise to experience the summer atmosphere of Uusikaupunki from the sea.
The summery evening gathering, "Suviehto Telakanrannas", will be held at Telakanranta in Pyhämaa on Saturday evening starting from 5 pm. At Suviehto, we'll be in a picnic mood, enjoying sausage grilling, a fun "nixnakkelikisa" (funny race), a petanque championship, and pleasant togetherness.
On Sunday, July 30th, we will celebrate Kalanti Day at Regional Museum of Kalanti, starting from 6 pm. The event, organized by Kalanti Society, will feature various activities such as demonstrations, music, poetry recitals, a raffle, and a guessing competition.
Pilvilinna Art House is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 2 PM to 6 PM. In addition to the Art House, Lace Cottage, a fun art trail, a rose garden, and a coffee terrace, Pilvilinna also offers weekly programs. Bingo takes place on Thursdays at 4:30 PM, and on Saturdays, you can enjoy Pilvilinna Piano Tunes at 4:30 PM.
Wahlberg's historical Museum House features an intriguing exhibition called "Captains - Multitaskers at Sea and on Land." The exhibition delves into the lives of eight captains, both in their hometown and far away at sea. The upper floor of the museum introduces the maritime history of the over 400-year-old city. The summer museums of the Uusikaupunki Museum, including the Pilot Museum at Vallimäki, showcasing the work of pilots, and the Sailor's Home Museum at the edge of Myllymäki, offering insights into the life of a seafaring family, are open daily from 12 PM to 3 PM, and admission to the small museums is free.
The revolutionary inventions and the stories of action-packed machines and devices at the Bonk Museum are bound to put a smile on your face. In Bonk's Children's Invention Lab, kids can build their own Bonk machine. For car enthusiasts, it's worth exploring the vintage vehicles at the Car Museum and the world's largest Saab collection. The Raunistula Dollhouse Club has set up a fascinating miniature world exhibition in the museum. For those who appreciate exhibitions, a visit to Pakkahuone, Galleria Horisontti, Runonkulma Gallery, and Tupsula is recommended.
The "Hidden Treasures of Uusikaupunki" -exhibition of Maritime Center showcases a diverse collection of maritime history from private collections. The main exhibition features several antique boat engines, a large-scale model of the Uusikaupunki Warma sailing ship, other miniature models, and ship paintings. Admission to the Maritime Center is free.
POMMISTA BONKKIIN! (From the Bomb to the Bonk) Henrik Helpiö's Retrospective 70th Anniversary Exhibition" is open at Gasthaus Pooki's restaurant, courtyard, and shed during the restaurant's opening hours.
You can engage in physical activities such as golfing on a golf course, going on mountain biking trips, visiting beaches for swimming, enjoying recreational saunas, exploring nature and fitness trails, cycling on the Velhoveden cycling route, playing outdoor basketball or Padel, visiting a Skatepark, using running stairs, and playing disc golf on disc golf courses.
In the Week 30 event tip list, you will find these and much more.
