Uusikaupunki in July offers its best once again. This week's listing includes summer exhibitions, museums, captivating performances in summer theaters, and guided tours in the historic Myllymäki and Uusikaupunki courtyards. Finland's most authentic rural festival, Karjurock, is held once again at Nopperla farm with performances by well-known artists. New this year is the family-friendly Pikkukarju event. Enjoy the summer with yoga at Santtioranta, feeling the sea breeze and the sun's rays on your skin, or on the lightly covered yoga patio at cottage yoga in Lokalahti. Let's enjoy the summer – rain or shine!


At Santtioranta, there's a summer-long program for the whole family! Children's Mondays are held every Monday until August 5th from 2 PM to 6 PM, featuring a free bouncy castle (weather permitting) and face painting for kids. Live Music Saturdays continue all summer with different artists performing until August 31st. On July 20th, Luca Sturniolo will be performing. Santtioranta Camping is a campsite known for its cheerful service, including a café-restaurant, ice cream kiosk, beach, activities, and accommodation.


Experience the charming atmosphere of old courtyards and gardens on the guided Yards and Wooden Houses tour on Tuesday, July 16th at 3 PM. Some stops on the route will feature owners sharing the history of their house and garden. The tour lasts about two hours and includes a coffee break in a garden. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Uusikaupunki Tourist Office or from the guide on-site. Guidance is in Finnish, but if necessary information in English as well.

Myllymuori's 10th Anniversary Adventure Myllytonttu and the Puzzle Nuts on Tuesday, July 16th, and Thursday, July 18th at 11 AM invites you to journey from story to story through music, play, and small tasks. The route is walked while exploring the sights of Uusikaupunki's center, accompanied by the cheerful Myllytonttu and Myllymuori. Myllytonttu's puzzle box is bursting with questions. We will also meet Myllytonttu's animal friends, such as Kurre the Squirrel. Guidance is in Finnish.


At the Lentävä Lokki Summer Theater, a delightful and lively story of Reidar Särestöniemi, the great painter of Lapland, will be performed. This week, the Reidar S. summer theater show will be on Tuesday, July 16th at 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Uusikaupunki Tourist Office at Rauhankatu 10. The play is performed in Finnish.


At the Pyhämaa Summer Theater, the amusing farce Vuoroin vieraissa entertains audiences. The last performances of the summer are this week on Tuesday, July 16th, Wednesday, July 17th, and Thursday, July 18th at 7 PM, Saturday, July 20th at 3 PM, and Sunday, July 21st at 6 PM. The play is performed in Finnish.


Cruises to the Isokari lighthouse island will take place from July 17th to 21st (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) on the passenger ship M/S Kerttu. During the journey, you will see the beautiful nature of the inner archipelago, the boundless open sea of the Bothnian Sea, abundant birds, and sea marks. On Isokari, you will have lunch at the Kasarmi Restaurant and explore the island's nature, history, and of course, Finland's third oldest lighthouse with a guide."


In the 1930s, Councillor of Commerce Johan Nordström brought various types of traditional windmills back to Myllymäki. On Wednesday, July 17th at 2 PM, there will be a guided tour of Myllymäki Park, including its plantings and buildings. The tour guide will be Raija Herrala-Nurmi. At Nopperla farm in Lokalahti, Uusikaupunki, there will be a new family-oriented Pikkukarju event day on Wednesday, July 17th, complementing the upcoming Karjurock, known as the world's hardest rural festival. The most anticipated part of Pikkukarju is Käärijä's concert starting at 7 PM. Additionally, there will be a Sometähdet vs. Karjurock Allstars soccer match, the Karjurock carnival, and other great activities. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.fi


At the traditional evening markets at Pakkahuone, the market fills up as usual with a summery atmosphere and musical performances every Wednesday from 4 PM to 7 PM. On Wednesday, July 17th, the music will be provided by Farah."


Pyhämaa's Fitness Wednesday will be held on July 17th at 7 PM in Riemupuisto with a circuit training session. After the workout, you can relax in the Rantsali sauna."


The doors of Uusikaupunki's New Church are open through volunteer efforts for personal reflection on summer Thursdays until August 1st from 11:45 AM to 2 PM."


At Uusikaupunki's New Church, there is a Traditional Organ Recital every Thursday until July 18th at 12 PM, featuring music on the historic Marcussen & Sohn organ (1865). On Thursday, July 18th, the final midday matinee will be performed by organist Ari Hirvonen.
 


Welcome to the Pakkahuone Bingo open to everyone on Friday, July 19th at 4 PM. Bingo cards and markers can be picked up at Pikku-Pakkis – just bring yourself! There will be a bouncy castle for children, weather permitting.


On summer Fridays from 4 PM to 7 PM, the traditional Männäinen themed market features not only market sales but also a Pop-Up café and live music. On Friday, July 19th, the Ukraine-themed market at Männäinen will feature performances by Ukrainian musicians.


Finland's most authentic festival, Karjurock, will be held on Friday, July 19th, and Saturday, July 20th at Nopperla farm in Lokalahti, Uusikaupunki. In addition to a variety of food and drink vendors, the festival area features an Ibiza-inspired zone by the pond, where attendees can lounge in deck chairs and enjoy refreshing drinks while watching the events on the festival stage. During breaks on the main stage, various performers will entertain on the second stage. As usual, the KarjuCamp camping area is located nearby.

On Friday, the stage will feature performances by Haloo Helsinki!, Abreu, Viivi, Michael Monroe, Tauski, and Skädäm. On Saturday, the lineup includes world-renowned artists Tarja Turunen & Marko Hietala, The 69 Eyes, Sanni, Gasellit, and Yö & JP Leppäluoto. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.


See and experience Uusikaupunki from the sea! On the guided sightseeing cruise on Friday evening, July 19th at 6 PM, you can enjoy the maritime atmosphere aboard the M/S Kerttu. The ship features comfortable indoor spaces, a café/bar, a sun deck, and restrooms. The two-hour cruise offers a chance to spend relaxing quality time with family and friends.


On the M/S Kerttu Saturday evening cruise on July 20th at 6 PM, you can look forward to live music, basking on the sun deck, exploring the nearby archipelago, and enjoying Isokari's signature refreshments.


Come to the Market – At the Recycling Market on Saturday, July 20th from 10 AM to 1 PM, explore sustainable development. The program includes a trunk flea market at the marketplace and presentation stands from Ukipolis Eco-Act Agents and Southwest Finland Waste Management (LSJH). LSJH will assist residents with everyday waste issues and guide them towards sustainable living. The Bicycle Pianist will be performing throughout the event, and at 11 AM, Rami Rafael & Päivi will perform on the market stage, followed by the Nurminen Bros at 12 PM. Welcome to enjoy the summer atmosphere at the marketplace!

The Splendor of a Bourgeois Home and the Golden Age of Maritime Navigation


Local history comes to life in the museums. The former bourgeois home of the tobacco manufacturer, Wahlberg's Museum House, showcases the splendor of a bygone bourgeois home on the ground floor and the golden age of maritime navigation on the upper floor. The museum is open until August 25th, Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday to Sunday from 11 AM to 4 PM.

Wahlberg's Museum House also offers plenty of activities for children. During the summer, there is a popular children's play area in the outbuilding, and in the yard, kids can try walking on stilts or navigating hobby horse obstacles. Inside, children can explore the museum like detectives, color electric trains, or play train games.

The furnishings of Luotonen's shoemaker's workshop, which operated in Ketunkallio until the early 1980s, have been transferred to the museum's outbuilding and are on display whenever the museum is open.


The former Uusikaupunki pilot station, located on the slope of Vallimäki, has served as a small summer museum showcasing the pilot's profession for 50 years this summer. The Pilot Museum is open daily until August 11th from 12 PM to 3 PM, and admission is free.


The Sailor's Home Museum is located on the edge of Myllymäki in one of Uusikaupunki's oldest surviving residential buildings. The small house is furnished to depict the home of a Uusikaupunki sailor's family in the early 1900s. The Sailor's Home Museum is open daily until August 11th from 12 PM to 3 PM, and admission is free.

Other places to see


Humor, bright colors, naive art, the scent of roses, and beautiful maritime views – all of this can be found at Art House Pilvilinna. The walls, floors, and ceilings of Pilvilinna are fully painted both inside and out. Artist Raija Nokkala's painting exhibitions in the main and courtyard buildings, along with humorous sculptures along the art trail, bring joy and happiness to visitors. The lace cottage, annually changing art exhibitions, the atmospheric art trail in the forest, the coffee terrace by the sea, the dessert table, and the card shop showcasing Pilvilinna's own products are all part of the experience. Pilvilinna is open until August 10th on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 2 PM to 6 PM."


You won't find a more enchanting attraction than the Bonk Museum, which offers the opportunity to explore the background of the vast Bonk Business Inc. industrial empire. Bonk is a whimsical fantasy product stemming from the idea of visual artist Alvar Gullichsen. Oy Bonk AB is a fictional family company around which a whole history has developed, with all sorts of inventions made in its name. In the summer, the Bonk Children's Inventing Workshop allows the youngest family members to design and build their own Bonk machine. The museum is open daily until August 6th from 10 AM to 6 PM."


In the three large exhibition halls of the Automobile Museum, the daydreams of car enthusiasts, both young and old, come true. The Minimaailma exhibition by the Raunistula Dollhouse Club entertains the whole family. The Automobile Museum is open daily in the summer from 10 AM to 6 PM. For groups, visits can be arranged by appointment."

Uusikaupunki's Old Church, Kalanti Church, and Pyhämaa Church are Roadside Churches and are open to visitors in the summer. It is also possible to visit the New Church on Thursdays and Saturdays.


Old Church in Uusikaupunki was built in 1629 and is the oldest building in the downtown area. The Old Church is open for visits until August 4th, from Wednesday to Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and on Sundays from 12 PM to 4 PM.

The Gothic-style New Church in Uusikaupunki, designed by architect Georg Theodor von Chiewitz, hosts Organ Recitals on Thursdays, June 27th, July 4th, July 11th, and July 18th, always at 12 PM, with free admission. The New Church is open until August 3rd on Thursdays, staffed by volunteers for personal reflection, from 11:45 AM to 2 PM, and on Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM, with a Uusikaupunki tour guide available.

The vaulted Kalanti Church, or St. Olaf's Grey Stone Church, was built at the end of the 14th century and is open until August 4th, from Wednesday to Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and on Sundays from 12 PM to 4 PM. The church's armory houses the summer café Suvi, open from Wednesday to Saturday from 11:15 AM to 4 PM, and on Sundays from 12:15 PM to 4 PM.

The churches of Pyhämaa are open until August 4th, from Wednesday to Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and on Sundays from 12 PM to 4 PM. The older, unique wooden church, Pyhämaa Sacrificial Church, was built between 1642 and 1650, with paintings covering the entire ceiling and interior walls. The newer grey stone church dates back to 1804.

For Exhibition Enthusiasts


The themed exhibition at Uusikaupunki's Wahlberg Museum House, "TULISUITSUINEN HEPO TULEE" - The 100-Year-Old Uusikaupunki Herring Railway,' tells the story of the 100-year-old Turku-Uusikaupunki railway. It covers the planning and construction of the railway, the trains and locomotives, and the impact of the railway on people's daily lives, other forms of transportation, commerce, and industry."


In the exhibition space of the cozy café at Pakkahuone Guest Harbor, Vilma Sappinen's photography exhibition 'Thoughts of Dawn' is on display until August 18th. The Pakkahuone café is open every day from 8 AM to 10 PM."


At Pakkahuone Square, in the former Vaso Mill, you will find the Uusikaupunki Maritime Center, maintained by the Uusikaupunki Maritime Historical Society. The Maritime Center is open until August 10th, Tuesday to Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM. The space features a variety of maritime historical exhibits, including several old boat engines, a large model of the Uusikaupunki sailing ship Varma, other scale models, numerous ship paintings, and an extensive sales section of the society. The summer exhibition 'Seafarers and Passenger Ships' showcases the profession of sailors and passenger ship traffic from Uusikaupunki. Admission to the exhibition is free.


Runonkulma Gallery is an art gallery and lending library located in the wooden house district of the city center. The gallery hosts rotating exhibitions, events, courses, lectures, and private functions. It also houses Pikkukylän Puoti, a shop selling Finnish handicrafts, design, and art products. The gallery is open in July from Wednesday to Friday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and on Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM. Runonkulma Gallery features the exhibition 'Sway Along' by Norwegian artist Elin Muren until July 20th. Muren's works and style reflect the beauty and nuances of nature.


Gallery-Art Lending Library Horisontti offers art experiences! The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 12 PM to 3 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. It features works by Uusikaupunki artists and visiting artists. In addition to the gallery, you can rent artworks for your home at an affordable monthly rate. The artist of the month for July is printmaker Tiina Kuusikoski with her exhibition 'Impression'.


On Iso-Vehanen Island, the porch of an old cottage has been converted into a charming summer gallery, featuring the Silk and Sea Charts summer exhibition, which is open around the clock. The gallery is located on the island's peninsula, where the sea is close, and terns hover. The place is peaceful and ideal for a picnic outing.

At the House of Thousands of Tassels, unique works made from tassels, including new animal figures, are on display. The fun tassel creations have even spread to the outer walls of the exhibition space. The House of Tassels is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 PM to 5 PM and on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.

What a wonderful way to start a new day with Beach Yoga, listening to the relaxing sound of the waves, feeling the sand under your toes, and gentle movement throughout your body. After this, you can't help but have a good day! Welcome to join us for yoga on Wednesday mornings at 9 AM at Santtioranta. Payment is made on-site, so please bring cash. Yoga is canceled in case of rain.

 
Come and feel the relaxing effect of nature while practicing yoga, with the earth as your floor, the sky as your ceiling, and bird songs and rustling trees as your background music. Satya Yoga organizes park yoga at Myllymäki Park on summer Thursdays.


What could be more wonderful than practicing yoga in pristine nature, in the fresh outdoor air by the sea, on a lightly covered yoga patio? Welcome to Sisula's cottage yoga in Eräistenkari, Lokalahti, on Fridays at 7 PM. Remember to dress according to the weather, bring your own yoga mat, and a blanket and warm clothing for the final relaxation. In case of rain, yoga will be held in the barn.


Open group mountain biking rides are held on Sundays at 6 PM. These rides are accessible for everyone, and beginners are warmly welcomed to join. The routes are adjusted based on the participants' skill levels.


Padel Uusikaupunki offers excellent facilities for enjoying the hugely popular sport of padel right in the city center. Two competition-level, LED-lit courts are located by the shore of Kaupunginlahti in Crusell Park, close to all amenities. Individual court reservations can be made for one hour or longer, and regular slots are available for consistent play.

Enjoy the joy of exercise in a stunning environment. A classic yard game that excites everyone. The new basketball court near the padel courts is freely available for everyone to use."


Golf with a good vibe by the sea. Uusikaupunki's full-length 18-hole golf course is both by the seaside and close to the city center.


At the end of Kaupunginlahti, in a great location close to the city center and the sea, lies the magnificent Skate Park Pump Track. Part of the skate park is designed with asphalt for beginners to practice tricks, while the fully concrete section offers opportunities to train up to Olympic level.


A piece of Finland's most beautiful archipelago is within your reach on this route without the need for a boat or worrying about ferry schedules – thanks to the road built through the islands. Drive the entire 50-kilometer route in one go or savor the archipelago atmosphere at a leisurely pace. The Velhovesi Ring Road takes you through the northern archipelago of Uusikaupunki, around the Freshwater Basin.

On Tuesdays during the summer, there is summer swimming available at Metsälehto Sauna from 6 PM to 8 PM. The sauna is spacious and provides excellent steam. You can enjoy a dip from the pier or enter the water directly from the shore. Changing rooms are available for both women and men. Swimming has a fee."

At Haimio's open sauna, summer swimming is available daily. The open sauna is accessible to everyone and is located next to the public beach. The first person to arrive heats the sauna. The sauna is managed and maintained by Jokisivu Youth Association. Voluntary sauna fee.

Out into Nature

You can enjoy nature on the Pamprinniemi nature trail in Pyhämaa, for example. In the city center area, there's Hiunjärvi, known as a bird lake, with its nature trails and lean-to shelters. You can hike to the accessible outdoor route and bird watching tower at Kasarminlahti starting from the sports field parking area. There is also a lean-to shelter near the trail. The Oinassaari lean-to in Korsaari is another nice destination for an outing, about 18 kilometers from Uusikaupunki towards Lepäinen. Pack some grillables in your backpack and off you go!
