What to do in Uusikaupunki - Events 5.-11.8.2024
August brings fresh, crisp mornings and evenings are getting darker, but we still have many wonderful events such as the nostalgic "Puupaatei Pakkahuoneel" and "Möljä Miittinki." On Saturday, August 10th, the Pakkahuone pier will host gleaming beauties of the sea, and around Voimala Zaku, you'll see a variety of stunning hobby vehicles. The summer's final "Tul toril" event will be celebrated as a Hobby Market, featuring appearances by the team Korihait players. You can still enjoy cruises, and the seasonal museums like the Pilot Museum, Sailor’s Home Museum, Art House Pilvilinna, and Bonk Museum will remain open for a bit longer. At Santtioranta, the summer's final Children's Monday will be celebrated on August 5th from 2 PM to 6 PM. Children can enjoy a free bouncy castle (weather permitting) and face painting. The Live Music Saturdays at Santtioranta will continue until August 31st with various artists. On Saturday, August 10th, Rami Rafael will be performing.
Uudenkaupungin Vanhat Talot ry will host a free guided walking tour titled "Get to Know Papelorikko and Other Kalaranta Plantings" on Tuesday, August 6th, at 5 PM along the shore of Kaupunginlahti, at the Kalaranta plantings. In the spring of 2023, green plantings were made in Uusikaupunki’s Kalaranta, which also include remnants from the city's significant sailing ship era, known as ballast plants. These plants were brought to Uusikaupunki with the ballast soil of sailing ships. One of the ballast plants, Papelorikko, later became the official plant of Uusikaupunki. Guidance is in Finnish.
Cruises to the Isokari lighthouse island will take place from August 7th to 11th (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) aboard the passenger ship M/S Kerttu. During the journey, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the inner archipelago and the vast expanse of the Bothnian Sea, with plenty of birds and navigational marks to see. Once on Isokari, lunch will be served at the Kasarmi Restaurant, and a guide will introduce you to the island’s nature, history, and Finland’s third oldest lighthouse.
See and experience Uusikaupunki from the sea! Join the guided evening cruise on Friday, August 9th, from 6 PM to 8 PM aboard M/S Kerttu and immerse yourself in the maritime atmosphere. Your guide for the evening will be the knowledgeable travel guide Suvi Sammalisto. The ship features comfortable indoor areas, a café/bar, a sun deck, and restrooms. This two-hour cruise offers a relaxing way to spend quality time with family and friends.
Welcome to a free Poetry Walk on the Kasarminlahti nature trail on Wednesday, August 7th, at 1 PM. Along the route, there will be stops to listen to and discuss poems. The trail is about 2 kilometers long and is accessible to all. The Poetry Walk will be hosted and read by librarian Lauri Seutu. The event is organized by the Uusikaupunki Library. The New Church of Uusikaupunki is open on summer Thursdays until August 29th from 11:45 AM to 2 PM. Volunteers ensure the church is available for personal reflection and quiet time.
Welcome to the open Bingo event at Pakkahuone on Friday, August 9th, at 4 PM. Bingo cards and markers can be picked up at Pikku-Pakkis – all you need to bring is yourself! There will also be a bouncy castle for children, weather permitting.
On summer Fridays from 4 PM to 7 PM, the traditional Männäinen themed market features not only market stalls but also a pop-up café and live music. On Friday, August 9th, at the Männäisten Square's Erätori, Duo Metsäpirtti, featuring Jukitsu and Pete, will be performing.
In a free concert designed for seniors, "The Silver Screen Sings – From La Cumparsita to Kulkurin Valssi," on Friday, August 9th, at 1 PM at the Cruselli Cultural Center, the program features beloved Finnish film music treasures familiar to older audiences. Short musical scenes from films will be projected onto the screen and brought back to life. Music is known to benefit memory and bring refreshment to daily life through familiar tunes, images, and cinematic atmospheres.
The Pakkahuone guest harbor will be filled with nostalgia, the scent of tar, and the warm glow of polished wooden surfaces as a magnificent gathering of wooden boats takes place once again on Saturday, August 10th, starting at 10 AM. The free event "Puupaatei Pakkahuoneel" will feature a variety of maritime beauties moored at the pier. Visitors can stroll through the market stalls and marvel at traditional skills displayed in live craftsmanship demonstrations. They can also delve into the fascinating world of wooden boats and hobby vehicles and engage with experts about their intricacies. The event will feature a performance by Jani Vahto & Band.
The relaxed hobby vehicle gathering "Möljä Miittinki" will take place along the shore of Kaupunginlahti, around the event restaurant Voimala Zaku, on Saturday, August 10th, starting at 10 AM. The event is free and open to both vehicle owners and enthusiasts, featuring cars, mopeds, motorcycles, and vintage boats. There will also be product demonstrations, music, and more. From 1 PM onwards, the Mojo Coyote band will provide music for the event.
The 100-year-old red-brick locomotive shed located in the Uusikaupunki railway station area, currently used for storage, houses boats owned by the Uusikaupunki Maritime Historical Society. In honor of the Wooden Boat Event and the 100th anniversary of the Uusikaupunki railway, the doors to the locomotive shed will be open on Saturday, August 10th, from 12 PM to 3 PM. A representative from the society will be present to discuss their activities and showcase the boats. Access to the locomotive shed is via Sairaalakatu, from the entrance near the eastern side of the skate park.
Tul toril - Hobby Market Caps Off the Summer Themed Market Series on Saturday, August 10th, from 10 AM to 1 PM
The event offers free activities and interesting exhibits for all ages right in the heart of the city center. The program includes performances by the Singing Dream Choir, Kalle, Susse & Mimosa, a fitness session led by Elleni, and an improv theater performance by Uusikaupunki Theater. The event will also feature the Korihait players, and children can enjoy outdoor toys and games.
The Splendor of a Bourgeois Home and the Golden Age of Maritime Trade
Local history comes to life in the museums. The former bourgeois home of a tobacco manufacturer, the Wahlberg Museum House, showcases the opulence of a bourgeois home on the ground floor and the golden age of maritime trade on the upper floor. The museum is open until August 25th, Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday to Sunday from 11 AM to 4 PM.
The Wahlberg Museum House offers plenty of activities for young visitors. During the summer, the outbuilding hosts a popular children's play area, and in the yard, children can try walking on stilts or navigating hobbyhorse obstacles. Indoors, children can explore the museum like detectives, color pictures of electric locomotives, or play with train sets.
Additionally, the interior of Luotonen’s cobbler workshop, which operated on Ketunkallio until the early 1980s, has been moved to the museum's outbuilding and is on display whenever the museum is open.
The former Uusikaupunki pilot station, located on the slopes of Vallimäki, has served as a small summer museum dedicated to the pilot profession for 50 years this summer. The Pilot Museum is open daily until August 11th from 12 PM to 3 PM, and admission is free.
The Sailor's Home Museum is located on the edge of Myllymäki in one of the oldest surviving residential buildings in Uusikaupunki. This small house is furnished to depict the home of a Uusikaupunki sailor's family from the early 20th century. The Sailor's Home is open daily until August 11th from 12 PM to 3 PM, and admission is free.
Other Attractions
Humor, bright colors, naive art, the scent of roses, and beautiful maritime views – all this can be found at Art House Pilvilinna. The walls, floors, and ceilings of Pilvilinna are painted inside and out. Artist Raija Nokkala's art exhibitions are featured in the main and outbuildings, with humorous sculptures along the art trail bringing joy and good feelings to visitors. The site includes a lace cottage, annually changing art exhibitions, a scenic art trail in the forest, a seaside café terrace, a dessert table, and a card shop showcasing Pilvilinna's own products. Pilvilinna is open until August 10th on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 2 PM to 6 PM.
You won't find a more enchanting place to explore than the Bonk Museum, which offers a chance to delve into the vast background of the Bonk Business Inc. industrial empire. Bonk is a whimsical fantasy product originating from the idea of visual artist Alvar Gullichsen. Oy Bonk AB is a fictional family company around which an entire history has been developed, featuring a variety of peculiar inventions. During the summer, children can visit Bonk’s Children’s Invention Workshop to design and build their own Bonk machine. The museum is open daily until August 6th from 10 AM to 6 PM.
In the three large exhibition halls of the Automobile Museum, the dreams of both young and old car enthusiasts come true. The Minimaailma (Miniworld) exhibition by the Raunistula Dollhouse Club entertains the entire family. The Car Museum is open daily in the summer from 10 AM to 6 PM, with group visits available by appointment.
For Exhibition Lovers
The thematic exhibition "Tulisuitsuinen Hepo tulee - The 100-Year-Old Uusikaupunki Herring Railway" at the Wahlberg Museum House in Uusikaupunki delves into the design and construction of the Turku-Uusikaupunki railway, which is celebrating its centenary. The exhibition explores the trains and locomotives, as well as the railway's impact on daily life, other forms of transportation, trade, and industry.
Located in the former Vaso Mill at Pakkahuone Square, the Uusikaupunki Maritime Center is maintained by the Uusikaupunki Maritime Historical Society. The Maritime Center is open until August 10th, from Tuesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 6 PM. The center features a variety of maritime historical exhibits, including several old boat engines, a large model of the Uusikaupunki sailing ship Varma, other ship models, numerous maritime paintings, and a well-stocked sales area of the society.
During the summer, the center hosts the exhibition "Seafarers and Passenger Ships," which showcases the profession of sailors and the passenger ship traffic that once operated from Uusikaupunki. Admission to the exhibition is free.
In the cozy café exhibition space of the Pakkahuone guest harbor, Vilma Sappinen's photography exhibition "Thoughts at Dawn" is on display until August 18th. The Pakkahuone café is open every day from 8 AM to 10 PM.
Runonkulma´s Gallery is an art gallery and art lending service located in the wooden house area in the city center. The gallery hosts rotating exhibitions, events, courses, lectures, and private functions. The space also houses Pikkukylän Puoti, which sells Finnish handicrafts, design, and art products. Runonkulma Gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM. Currently, the gallery features an exhibition of paintings by Jari Nordman titled "Encounters," which runs until August 25th.
Gallery-Art Lending Library Horizon offers delightful art experiences! The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 12 PM to 3 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. It features works by local Uusikaupunki artists as well as visiting artists. In addition to viewing art in the gallery, you can also borrow artworks from the art lending library at an affordable monthly rate to enjoy at home.
Jori Tapio Kalliola was chosen as the 2021 ITE Artist of the Year by the Rural Education Association (Maaseudun Sivistysliitto). He is a self-taught outsider and ITE artist who has emerged from outside the official art world. Kalliola creates his art from recycled materials, such as old logs, doors, set panels, metal and wood scraps, and leftover paints from hardware stores. His work can be explored at the Cruselli Cultural Center in the exhibition "The Endless Heaviness of an Unlearned Person," which is open until August 28th.

Silk and Sea Charts Summer Exhibition On the island of Iso-Vehanen, an old cottage porch has been transformed into a charming summer gallery. The "Silk and Sea Charts" summer exhibition is open around the clock. The gallery is located on a peninsula of the island, close to the sea where terns flutter. It is a peaceful spot, making it an excellent destination for a picnic.
Tupsula - The Land of Thousands of Pom-Poms Tupsula showcases unique works made from pom-poms, including new animal figures. The playful pom-pom creations have even spread to the exterior walls of the exhibition space. Tupsula is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 PM to 5 PM, and on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.
Joy of Exercise
The Uusikaupunki Golf Club is hosting a free family event called "Limppari Golf" every Tuesday until August 6th, from 5 PM to 7 PM. Both children and adults can participate in the course. The top three performers of the day will receive fantastic prizes. Additionally, anyone who submits a scorecard throughout the summer will be entered into a draw to win playing rights for the remainder of the 2024 season. The more often you participate and submit your scorecard, the greater your chances of winning.

Welcome to Sisula’s cottage yoga sessions at Eräistenkari in Lokalahti on Fridays at 7 PM. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather, and bring your own yoga mat, a blanket for the final relaxation, and warm clothing. In case of rain, the yoga session will be held in the barn.

Everyone is welcome to join the community mountain biking rides held on Sundays at 6 PM. These rides are accessible to beginners and first-timers are warmly encouraged to join. The routes are adjusted according to the participants' skill levels.
Padel Uusikaupunki offers excellent facilities for playing the highly popular sport of padel right in the city center. Two competition-level, LED-lit courts are located on the shore of Kaupunginlahti in Crusell Park, close to all amenities. Individual court slots can be booked for an hour or longer, and regular players can reserve fixed slots for ongoing practice.
Right next to the padel courts, a new basketball court is available for everyone to use freely. It's a classic outdoor game that never fails to engage and excite.
Enjoy cheerful golf by the sea. Uusikaupunki has a full-sized 18-hole golf course is uniquely situated right by the seaside and almost in the city center.
Uusikaupunki Skate Park is a popular destination for skating enthusiasts, offering a variety of ramps, rails, and other features suitable for skaters of all skill levels. Located conveniently near the city center, it provides an excellent venue for both beginners and experienced skaters to practice their skills and enjoy the sport in a vibrant community setting. The park is a great place for outdoor activity, socializing, and honing skateboarding techniques. Skate Park is located by the end of Kaupunginlahti.
A piece of Finland's most beautiful archipelago is accessible on this route without needing a boat or worrying about ferry schedules, thanks to the road built through the islands. Drive the entire 50-kilometer route in one go or savor the archipelago atmosphere at a leisurely pace. The Velhovesi Ring Road takes you through the northern archipelago of Uusikaupunki, around the freshwater basin.
Every Tuesday during the summer, enjoy a refreshing swim at Metsälehto Sauna from 6 PM to 8 PM. The spacious sauna provides excellent steam, and you can comfortably plunge into the water from the pier or directly from the shore. Separate dressing rooms are available for both men and women. The swimming session has a fee.
At Haimio Free Sauna, you can enjoy summer swimming daily. The free sauna is open to everyone and is located next to a public beach. The first person to arrive is responsible for heating the sauna. The sauna is managed and maintained by Jokisivu Youth Association. There is a voluntary sauna fee.
Outdoor Activities
You can experience nature on the Pamprinniemi nature trail in Pyhämaa. In the city center, Hiunjärvi, known for its birdlife, offers nature trails and a lean-to shelter. For an accessible outdoor trail and bird-watching tower, you can hike from the sports field parking area to Kasarminlahti. There is also a lean-to shelter near the trail. Another great destination is the Oinassaaren lean-to shelter in Korsaari, located about 18 kilometers from Uusikaupunki towards Lepäinen. Pack some grillable treats in your backpack and head out!
