History comes alive in the museums

museo
Wahlberg’s Museum House (Ylinenkatu 11) is located within the city’s grid-plan area, surrounded by a charming wooden-house milieu. Fredrik Wahlberg, the founder of Uusikaupunki’s tobacco factory, had this impressive residence built for himself in the early 1870s. The rooms of the house still feature old decorative tiled stoves and skillfully painted ceiling artworks; in the salon, even the original hand-painted wallpapers from over 150 years ago have been preserved.

The upper floor of the museum showcases shipbuilding, outfitting, and commercial seafaring. Sailors’ chests, souvenirs, ship paintings, and a captain’s navigation instruments offer a fascinating look into the city’s maritime history. The youngest family members can play detective in the museum and complete exhibition-related tasks.

You can explore maritime history and the life of the local bourgeoisie from Tuesday to Friday, between 12 and 3 pm.

Museo näyttely
The exhibition ‘Among the First – Women of Uusikaupunki in a Man’s World’ at Wahlberg’s Museum House presents a total of 13 women from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century who were pioneers in professions that were officially reserved for men. Such professions long included, for example, the roles of organist and doctor. Many of these women also pursued activities that were not yet considered appropriate for women, such as hunting or sailing.

The exhibition is open during the museum’s opening hours until late March 2026

polkuauto
The Automobile Museum, located on Autotehtaankatu, is open every day from 11 am. to 5 pm. Across its three exhibition halls, you can explore over one hundred vehicles – from classic cars to futuristic concept models, as well as motorcycles and even an
airplane. The place of honor is given to the first Finnish-made car produced in Mynämäki, the Korvensuu from 1913.

The museum also displays the first Saab car manufactured at the Uusikaupunki car factory on 13 November 1969. The Saab 96 model was presented to President Urho Kekkonen, and its registration number was EKA-96. There are also older Saabs from Trollhättan, Sweden, including the first Saab 92 ever registered in Finland, dating back to 1950.

Visitors can also explore the restoration workshop and the museum shop. In addition, the museum hosts a diverse art exhibition featuring works from a Finnish collector’s private collection, including pieces by Juhani Palmu and Pekka Laiho.
