History Comes to Life in the Museums

museo
Wahlberg's Museum House (Ylinenkatu 11) is located in the historic wooden house district laid out in a grid plan. The impressive residence was built in the early 1870s by Fredrik Wahlberg, founder of Uusikaupunki’s tobacco factory.

The rooms still feature original decorative tiled stoves and beautifully crafted ceiling paintings, and in the salon you can even admire the original hand-painted wallpapers dating back more than 150 years.

Upstairs, the exhibition presents shipbuilding, outfitting and merchant seafaring. Sailors’ sea chests, souvenirs, ship portraits and a captain’s navigation instruments vividly tell the story of the town’s rich maritime heritage. Younger visitors can play detective in the museum and complete exhibition-related tasks.

You can explore maritime history and bourgeois life from Tuesday to Friday, 12–3 pm.

näyttely
At Wahlberg House Museum, the exhibition “Among the First – Women of Uusikaupunki in a Man’s World” presents 13 local women from the late 19th and early 20th centuries who were pioneers in professions that were officially reserved for men at the time. Such occupations long included, for example, organists and doctors.

Many of these women also pursued hobbies that were not yet considered acceptable for women, such as hunting or sailing. The exhibition is open during the museum’s regular opening hours until late March 2026.

The museum also showcases the very first Saab produced at the Uusikaupunki car factory on 13th of November in 1969. This Saab 96 was presented to President Urho Kekkonen and carried the registration number EKA-96. In addition, visitors can see older Saabs manufactured in Trollhättan, Sweden, including the first Saab 92 registered in Finland in 1950.

The museum also features a restoration workshop and a museum shop. On display as well is a diverse art exhibition from a Finnish collector’s private collection, including works by Juhani Palmu and Pekka Laiho.
