Uusikaupunki Crusell Week Events July 22nd - 28th, 2024

The annual experiential music festival Crusell Week is celebrated for an entire week from July 22nd to 28th in Uusikaupunki. This year's theme is TOGETHER.

Named after the internationally renowned clarinetist and composer Bernhard Henrik Crusell, who was born in Uusikaupunki, Crusell Week is a globally unique festival specializing in woodwind music. For one summer week, music students from around the world gather for woodwind masterclasses in Uusikaupunki's charming, historic settings.

During Crusell Week, there is a daily event called Päivän Puhallus at the Uusikaupunki marketplace at 12 PM, and the Crusell Women's Café is open from 12 PM to 2 PM. Top musicians offer memorable musical moments in their concerts, and there are also interesting lectures available. Tickets can be purchased from the Uusikaupunki Tourist Office at Rauhankatu 10, open Mon-Fri from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sat from 10 AM to 2 PM, or from www.lippu.fi, as well as an hour before the concert at the door. Our delightful seaside town also offers plenty of other sights and activities. These include glimpses into old houses, picnics for families with Myllymuori, the Café Kukonmäki pop-up café, the Kalanti Day's Homecoming Festival, and the wonderful, atmospheric Night of Lanterns. Grab a blanket, pack a picnic basket, and head to Vallinmäki!


Now is a wonderful opportunity to peek into old houses! The Uusikaupunki Old Houses wooden house event will be held again on the first weekend of September. During this event, beautiful, atmospheric homes and lush gardens open their doors and gates for visitors to explore and admire. On the pre-event day of Crusell Week, you can peek into four old houses and gardens. The open houses during the event are all very different, showcasing the many faces of the city's wooden houses. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Uusikaupunki Tourist Office or from the marketplace.


Santtioranta offers summer-long activities for the whole family! Children's Mondays are celebrated every Monday until August 5th from 2 PM to 6 PM, featuring a free bouncy castle (weather permitting) and face painting for kids. Live Music Saturdays continue until August 31st with various artists throughout the summer. On July 27th, Rami Rafael will be performing.

Santtioranta Camping is a cheerful service campsite that includes a café-restaurant, an ice cream kiosk, a beach, activities, and accommodation options.


Join Myllymuori's 10th Anniversary Adventure "Myllytonttu and the Puzzle Nuts" on Tuesday, July 23rd, and Thursday, July 25th at 11 AM, as you are taken from one story to another through music, play, and small tasks. The route is walked through the sights of Uusikaupunki's center, accompanied by the cheerful Myllytonttu and Myllymuori. Myllytonttu's puzzle box is bursting with questions. We will also meet Myllytonttu's animal friends, such as Kurre the Squirrel. Tickets are available at the Uusikaupunki Tourist Office.


Cruises to the Isokari Lighthouse Island are available from July 24th to 28th (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) aboard the passenger vessel M/S Kerttu. During the journey, you'll have the opportunity to see the beautiful nature of the inner archipelago, the vast open Selkämeri, numerous birds, and sea marks. Upon arrival at Isokari, you'll enjoy lunch at the Kasarmi Restaurant and explore the island's nature, history, and, of course, Finland's third oldest lighthouse, guided by a local expert.


According to the Finnish Heritage Agency, Uusikaupunki is one of the best-preserved Empire-style wooden towns in Finland. The best way to delve into the history of this wooden town is by taking a guided history-focused walking tour led by an authorized tour guide on Wednesday, July 24th from 11 AM to 12 PM. This guided tour is an interesting time travel experience and a wealth of information for both tourists and original residents of Uusikaupunki. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Uusikaupunki Tourist Office or from the guide on-site.


Pack your snacks and join a free, activity-filled picnic with Myllymuori on Wednesday, July 24th, and Friday, July 26th from 10 AM to 11 AM at Myllymäki.


Café Kukonmäki, a small pop-up café, is open on Wednesday, July 24th from 10 AM to 6 PM. Kukonmäki is located in a charming wooden house setting. The selection includes freshly baked pastries, coffee, and refreshments. For both small and large appetites, there are light lunches available, such as delicious toasts and Kukonmäki's own smoked salmon soup. The café dogs Freja and Tove, the cats Hilma and Dave, and the adorable rabbits warmly welcome all visitors.


The traditional evening markets at Pakkahuone are filled with a summery atmosphere and accompanied by live music every Wednesday from 4 PM to 7 PM. On Wednesday, July 24th, the music will be provided by a Kolmas Nainen tribute band.


The doors of Uusikaupunki's New Church are open for personal contemplation every summer Thursday until August 1st from 11:45 AM to 2 PM, thanks to volunteer efforts.


The atmospheric Night of Lanterns picnic event on Thursday, July 25th at 9 PM will once again gather the people of Uusikaupunki at Vallinmäki for an open-air concert. Bring a blanket and some snacks, and head to Vallinmäki. A personal lantern will add a cozy touch to the dimming evening. The evening's performers include Crusell Week artists and students, Valeria Chioru, Tomi Paldanius, and Heikki Hakkarainen. The event is free to attend.


Welcome to the open Bingo event at Pakkahuone on Friday, July 26th at 4 PM. Bingo cards and markers can be picked up at Pikku-Pakkis—just bring yourself! There will be a bouncy castle for children, weather permitting.


On summer Fridays from 4 PM to 7 PM, the traditional Männäinen themed market features not only market sales but also a pop-up café and live music. On Friday, July 26th, the Männäinen market's "Rättärit and Grandpa Mopeds" theme will include a performance by the entertainment orchestra HUMU.


See and experience Uusikaupunki from the sea! On the Friday evening cruise on July 26th at 6 PM, you can enjoy the maritime atmosphere aboard M/S Kerttu. The ship features cozy indoor spaces, a café/bar, a sun deck, and restrooms. The two-hour cruise offers an opportunity to spend relaxed quality time with family and friends.


On Saturday, July 27th, Come to the Market -event will offer wellness through music. From 10 AM to 1 PM, there will be a mask-making workshop for children with Myllymuori, and at 12 PM, Crusell Week’s Fanfare of the day will take place. The Crusell Women’s Café will be open at the square from 9 AM to 2 PM.

Local history comes to life in museums. The Wahlberg Museum House, a former bourgeois home of a tobacco manufacturer, showcases the splendor of a bourgeois home from bygone days on the ground floor and the golden age of seafaring on the upper floor. The museum is open until August 25th, Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday to Sunday from 11 AM to 4 PM.

Wahlberg Museum House offers plenty of activities for children. During the summer, there is a popular children's play area in the courtyard building, where kids can try walking on stilts or jumping over hobbyhorse obstacles. Indoors, children can explore the museum like detectives, color pictures of electric locomotives, or play with toy trains.

The interior of the Luotonen shoemaker's workshop, which operated in Ketunkallio until the early 1980s, has been moved to the museum's courtyard building and is on display whenever the museum is open.

The former Uusikaupunki pilot station, located on the slope of Vallinmäki, has served as a small summer museum dedicated to the pilot profession for 50 years this summer. The Pilot Museum is open daily until August 11th from 12 PM to 3 PM, and admission is free.

The Sailor's Home Museum is located on the edge of Myllymäki in one of Uusikaupunki's oldest surviving residential buildings. The small house is furnished to depict the home of a Uusikaupunki sailor's family from the early 1900s. The Sailor's Home is open daily until August 11th from 12 PM to 3 PM, and admission is free.

Other Attractions


Humor, bright colors, naive art, the scent of roses, and beautiful seaside views—all this can be found at Taidetalo Pilvilinna. The walls, floors, and ceilings of Pilvilinna are painted from top to bottom, both inside and out. Artist Raija Nokkala's paintings are on display for sale in the main and courtyard buildings, and humorous sculptures along the art path bring joy and good cheer to visitors. The Lace Cottage and annually changing art exhibitions, the atmospheric art path in the forest, the coffee terrace by the sea, the delicacy table, and the card shop showcasing Pilvilinna's own products all add to the charm. Pilvilinna is open until August 10th on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 2 PM to 6 PM.


You won't find a more enchanting place to explore than the Bonk Museum, which offers the chance to delve into the background of the vast Bonk Business Inc. industrial empire. Bonk is a whimsical fantasy product originating from the imagination of visual artist Alvar Gullichsen. Oy Bonk AB is a fictional family company that has developed an entire history and has made all sorts of inventions. In the summer, the Bonk Children's Invention Workshop allows the little ones to design and build their own Bonk machine. The museum is open daily until August 6th from 10 AM to 6 PM.


In the three large exhibition halls of the Automobile Museum, the dreams of both young and old car enthusiasts come true. The Minimaailma exhibition by the Raunistula Dollhouse Club entertains the whole family. The Automobile Museum is open daily in the summer from 10 AM to 6 PM. Group visits can be arranged by appointment.

Churches

Old Church in Uusikaupunki, as well as the churches in Kalanti and Pyhämaa, are Road Churches and are open to visitors in the summer. The New Church in Uusikaupunki is also open for visits on Thursdays and Saturdays.


Old Church in Uusikaupunki was built in 1629 and is the oldest building in the downtown area. The Old Church is open for visits until August 4th, from Wednesday to Saturday between 11 AM and 5 PM, and on Sundays from 12 PM to 4 PM.

In the Gothic-style New Church of Uusikaupunki, designed by architect Georg Theodor von Chiewitz, there are Organ Quarter concerts on Thursdays: June 27th, July 4th, July 11th, and July 18th, all at 12 PM, with free admission. The New Church is open for individual contemplation, supported by volunteers, until August 3rd on Thursdays from 11:45 AM to 2 PM, and on Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM, during which time a Uusikaupunki tourist guide is available.

The vaulted Kalanti Church, also known as St. Olaf's Church, was built at the end of the 1300s and is open until August 4th, from Wednesday to Saturday between 11 AM and 5 PM, and on Sundays from 12 PM to 4 PM. The church's summer café, Suvi, operates in the armory from Wednesday to Saturday between 11:15 AM and 4 PM, and on Sundays from 12:15 PM to 4 PM.

The Pyhämaa churches are open until August 4th, from Wednesday to Saturday between 11 AM and 5 PM, and on Sundays from 12 PM to 4 PM. The older, unique wooden church, the Pyhämaa Sacrifice Church, was built between 1642 and 1650, with paintings covering the entire ceiling and interior walls. The newer stone church dates back to 1804.

For Exhibition Enthusiasts


The themed exhibition at Wahlberg Museum House, "Tulisuitsuinen Hepo tulee - The 100-Year-Old Uusikaupunki Herring Track," tells the story of the design and construction of the 100-year-old Turku-Uusikaupunki railway, the trains and locomotives, and the railway's impact on people's daily lives, other modes of transportation, commerce, and industry.


In the exhibition space of the atmospheric café at Pakkahuone guest marina, Vilma Sappinen's photography exhibition "Thoughts of Dawn" is on display until August 18th. The Pakkahuone café is open every day from 8 AM to 10 PM.


Located in the former Vaso Mill at Pakkahuone Square, the Uusikaupunki Maritime Center is maintained by the Uusikaupunki Maritime Historical Association. The Maritime Center is open until August 10th, Tuesday to Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM.

The center showcases a variety of maritime historical exhibits, including several old boat engines, a large-scale model of the Uusikaupunki sailing ship Varma, other ship models, numerous marine paintings, and an extensive sales point for the association.

This summer, the special exhibition "Seafarers and Passenger Ships" is featured, highlighting the profession of sailors and the passenger ship traffic from Uusikaupunki. Admission to the exhibition is free.


Runonkulma Gallery is an art gallery and art lending service located in the wooden house district of the city center. The gallery hosts rotating exhibitions, events, courses, lectures, and private functions. It also houses Pikkukylän Puoti, a shop selling Finnish handmade crafts, design, and art products.

In July, the gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM. On Tuesday, July 23rd, the gallery will open an exhibition of paintings by Jari Nordman titled "Encounters," running from July 24th to August 25th. Join us for the opening celebration at 6 PM.


Gallery-Art Lending Library Horisontti offers art experiences! The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 12 PM to 3 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. It features works by artists from Uusikaupunki as well as visiting artists. In addition to viewing the art, you can also borrow artworks from the lending library for an affordable monthly fee.
The artist of the month for July is printmaker Tiina Kuusikoski with her exhibition "Impression."


On the island of Iso-Vehanen, the porch of an old cottage has been transformed into a charming summer gallery, featuring the "Silk and Sea Charts" summer exhibition, which is open 24/7. The gallery is located on the peninsula of the island, where the sea is close and terns hover. The peaceful location makes it an ideal destination for a picnic.

Tupsula – House of Thousands of Tassels
Tupsula showcases unique tassel art pieces, including new animal figures. The whimsical tassel creations extend to the exterior walls of the exhibition space. Tupsula is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 PM to 5 PM, and on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Joy of Movement


The Uusikaupunki Golf Club is hosting a free Limppari Golf event for the whole family every Tuesday until August 6th from 5 PM to 7 PM. Both children and adults can participate in completing the course. The top three performers of the day will receive fantastic prizes. Additionally, anyone who submits a scorecard throughout the summer will be entered into a drawing for playing rights for the remainder of the 2024 season. The more you participate and submit scorecards, the higher your chances of winning the prize.

What a wonderful way to start a new day with Beach Yoga in Santtioranta, listening to the relaxing sound of the waves, feeling the sand under your feet, and gentle movement throughout your body. After this, you can't help but have a good day! Join us for yoga at Santtioranta every Wednesday morning at 9 AM. Payment is made on-site, so please bring cash. The yoga session will be canceled in case of rain.

 
Come and feel the relaxing effects of nature while practicing yoga, with the ground as your floor, the sky as your ceiling, and birdsong and the rustling of trees as your background music. Satya Yoga offers park yoga sessions at Myllymäki Park every Thursday during the summer.


What could be more wonderful than practicing yoga in pristine nature, in the fresh outdoor air by the sea, on a lightly covered yoga patio? Welcome to cottage yoga at Sisula, Lokalahti Eräistenkari, every Friday at 7 PM. Remember to dress according to the weather, bring your own yoga mat, and have a blanket and warm clothing for the final relaxation. In case of rain, the yoga session will be held in the barn.


Open to all, community mountain biking rides take place every Sunday at 6 PM. These rides are beginner-friendly, and newcomers are warmly welcomed. The routes will be adjusted according to the participants' skill levels.


Padel Uusikaupunki offers fantastic facilities for enjoying the immensely popular sport of padel right in the city center. Two competition-level LED-lit courts are located on the shore of Kaupunginlahti in Crusell Park, close to all amenities. Individual court reservations can be made for an hour or longer, and regular slots are available for those who wish to play consistently.

Experience the joy of exercise in a beautiful setting. The classic outdoor game that never fails to excite. The new basketball court near the padel courts is freely available for everyone to use.


Enjoy cheerful golf by the sea. Uusikaupunki's full-length 18-hole golf course is located right by the seashore and is almost in the city center.


At the end of Kaupunginlahti, in a prime location near the city center and the sea, lies the impressive Skatepark Pumptrack. Part of the skatepark is paved with asphalt, designed for beginners to practice tricks, while the fully concrete section offers opportunities to train up to Olympic level.


A piece of Finland's most beautiful archipelago is within your reach on this route, without the need for a boat or worrying about ferry schedules – thanks to the road built through the islands. You can drive the entire 50-kilometer route in one go or savor the archipelago atmosphere at a leisurely pace. The Velhovesi Ring Road takes you to the northern archipelago of Uusikaupunki, around the Freshwater Basin.

On Tuesdays during the summer, there is evening swimming available at Metsälehto Sauna from 6 PM to 8 PM. The sauna is spacious and provides good steam. You can enjoy a dip in the water from the pier, but there is also direct access to the water from the shore. Changing rooms are available for both women and men. There is a fee for swimming.

Summer swimming is available daily at Haimio's Free Sauna. The sauna is open to everyone and is located by the public beach. The first person to arrive heats the sauna. The sauna is managed and maintained by Jokisivu Youth Association. A voluntary sauna fee is appreciated.


You can enjoy nature, for example, on the Pamprinniemi Nature Trail in Pyhämaa. In the city center, you can find Hiunjärvi, known for birdwatching, with its nature trails and lean-to shelter. The accessible outdoor trail and bird-watching tower at Kasarminlahti can be reached by hiking from the sports field parking area. There is also a lean-to shelter near the trail. Another pleasant destination is the Oinassaari lean-to shelter located in Korsaaressa, about 18 kilometers from Uusikaupunki towards Lepäinen. Pack some grilling supplies in your backpack and head out!
